For what I know, 17 is misfortune number, and it is because in latin is XVII and VIXI in latin is "lived" and sometimes used like "like passed away", so the word vixi was related to dead itself.

Never looked out the reason of 13 being considered unlucky or similar and why eliminated from buildings (never noticed this at least in Europe).
