The older I get, the less I want my software to change. Why change an UI that isn’t broken? All you do is make my brain hurt, quite literally, as the neural pathways I forged over the decades are now out-of-sync with your “better” version.

Truth is replicated, not changed.

Is Tim Apple in the room with us now?

Change is the only constant. No pain no gain...

It’s like teaching an old dog new tricks

The same feeling I got , when they keep blocking the road for building the same utilities that obviously not broken like water pipe on the street , gas and all that ..it’s better than just leave it alone , things are not broken .

Sounds like every skilled excel user

That's the problem with digital technology, you are forced to use the new shit. In RL you can't be forced like I'm using the iron pan from my Urgrossmutter over 100 years old. ❤️

Bless her heart 🧡

Them: You just don’t like change

Me: I’ve embraced change for over 50 years so by now I actually know what I like. Go away kiddo.😂

void Linux + dwm + st is all one needs in life

🧡🔎

Hugs 🫂 Gigi.

Just to know the amount of you pain... Linux or Windows user?

Time for some new brain pathways 🍄

WHAT IF INSTEAD OF ONLY A LIGHT/DARK TOGGLE WE HAVE A 3RD THEME THAT IS CALLED 'CLASSIC' MODE THATS RETRO/ORIGINAL/WHATEVER

OR, MAINTAIN ALL MAJOR VERSIONS OF YOUR THEMES (NIGHTMARE?) AND LET USERS CHOOSE ANY THEME AT ANY TIME

NOW YOU HAVE ME THINKING ABOUT ADDING A CHRISTMAS TOGGLE SO MY SITE 🤣 NOW *MY* BRAIN HURTS

I'm quite close to agreeing with you. I can only imagine two good reasons to change the UI:

1. Fixes - the need to add, remove or change something to fix a bug or an objectively wrong detail.

2. Evolution - noticing that all similar apps have done that change and you're phasing out.

Any other subjective reason to change puts users in a perception of randomness.

I’ve been exploring software designs with a command line interface foundation.

Gigi’s post is helping me realize that a CLI is under fundamentally different constraints. Adding a new command or flag doesn’t disrupt any previous functionality.

However if you are using a graphical user interface, each command needs to compete with the others around it. Any change could necessitate a rearrangement of our mental models, causing this psychological friction Gigi describes.

I’m not saying CLI is always greater than GUI. But I’m starting to wonder if all software functionality should aim to start as a command line interface.

lol, Gigi just got his Tahoe update.

now for the flood of UI bugs

Actually appstores also require regular updates, or? Nonsense though.

Totally feel this 😅

Half the time it feels like the updates are just there to test our patience, not improve anything.

If an interface works, maybe just… let it live! My brain can only remap so many pathways in one lifetime 😂🤝

Feel this. And common.

Though I wonder if the more you do this, the more your brain atrophy’s.

Figuring shit out keeps you nimble.

CLI still good after all these years.

All coders need side hobbies. Build something **_else_** that doesn't matter to other people and invest your creative solipsistic energy there, so that you can be a minimalist in the things that actually do matter.

Man’s greatest ill is his inability to leave shit alone and to sit quietly 😁

How else to justify the upgrade fee?

📌 100% this. The friction caused by destroying 'muscle memory' is a real productivity killer. It’s like they forget that 'not broken' is actually a feature, not a bug to be fixed.

Agreed…

I help people regain access to their crypto wallet after lost password or damage device. I don't ask for seeds or private keys.

same here. first time I'm the last person in the extended family who is upgrading to the latest iOS version 🤷🏻

Forever required to pursue growth for shareholders and advertisers.

Back in my day we used to say: Never change a running system / machine. 💥

Are you referring to core/knots by any chance?

Good enough is good enough

Upgrades are not always upgrades.

Dat ony gooder for selfish 21M-coiner. Me want hole coin too n jack make happen wit 100000000:1 split. Now me rich! have 200 bitcoins! Tank jack for be new bitcoiner and fix it so we all rich! BIP177 feed world wit 1 Pizza!

Currently putting together a "small" front-end for new Nostr secure authentication as a basic POC. Convinced that all I need is a few jQuery methods and maybe a couple of js plugins. After getting LLM to build the code, Visual Studio Code is showing lots of errors. There are 20 files plus?

Silicon valley must pretend they doing something by pushing updates that actually make things worse.

There's a lesson for YouTube here.
