Paid, Private and WOT relays are great but functionality is limited to experienced users. Users who are hardcore on the cause are down to pay to play.
If Nostr wants to grow, if it still wants to grow and keep its user base, thereโs got to be another way to combat spam.
Yeah, As a relay operator, combatting spam has been an interesting challenge.

Not really. Any dedicated spammer wanting to really fuck with you is going to have a GPU to get past proof of work limits. If you put it too high, the casual user is never going to be able to do it on consumer devices, Too low and it kind of defeats the purpose.

Same with the paid ralays model perhaps.

Maybe there can be an option to filter out all posts by accounts with a low zaps/posts ratio, less than 1 zapped sats per post for starters.

Sure anyone can but not everyone is willing to pay, and no new user can benefit from wot. If a new user is constantly being bombarded with spam, their likelihood of sticking around is zero.

Is it time for a muslim relay on nostr?
We are approaching 100 muslim npubs and about 1/3 seem engaged weekly. Relay management (whether paid, private, or WoT) seems to be a natural progression for nostr. Honestly, the more the merrier considering it would only aid in the decentralization.
I'd think if we had about 20 muslim npubs interested then we'd be able to pull it off. What y'all think?

I think for free relays it will be a combination of WoT, machine learning, LLM, and some more manual hardcoded algos. Whoever can do these properly will be ahead of the game. It will be a whack-a-mole for a while until tools are properly installed in relays..
Some relays may share their results as in reporting events for others to use.
Big relays may enforce PoW for a while to be able to accept the initial notes. But users could have another option to just submit to smaller relays and get some history and then big relays if they don't want to do PoW.
