we need to replace github with an open alternative

nostr seems like an ideal fit

Make it happen brother! You have the power

We can make them obsolete

💜

I agree. Check out my project gitworkshop.dev and ngit built on nostr.

Agreed! 👊🏾😎⚡️🍷

I wonder when we will arrive at the pay for running storage scenario? In other words you mine Bitcoin by having storage for others to connect to. If you get paid for running storage you are incentivized to encourage others and this is decentralized. Like mempool but worse.

There is "filecoin" and "chia" which allegedly do that storage renting stuff. Doesn't really seem to work.

And BitTorrent... It's a mess.

I suppose here the idea is rather a developer platform which enables code sharing and communication for developers/development.

and "storj" was another one

In theory a great idea, they just all have shitcoins attached to them... IPFS + lightning would be cool imo

Pretty sure that nostr:nprofile1qqsggm4l0xs23qfjwnkfwf6fqcs66s3lz637gaxhl4nwd2vtle8rnfqprdmhxue69uhhg6r9vehhyetnwshxummnw3erztnrdakj7qfqwaehxw309ahx7um5wghx26tww4hxg7nhv9h856t89eehqctrv5hsz5xkmf has been working on that for a while without much fanfare nostr:nprofile1qqs06gywary09qmcp2249ztwfq3ue8wxhl2yyp3c39thzp55plvj0sgprdmhxue69uhhg6r9vehhyetnwshxummnw3erztnrdakj74c23x6 has mentioned it often and I think they have tried to get funding. I reserve the right to be wrong with that and could have it confused with something else

No, you're right. That's why we just added another experienced Nostr sys admin to the team. Chip and Enki and Michael are working on the design docs. Should have the MVP out relatively soon.

I update Sybil today, to add the git stuff events, to help them test it. :-)

It's the public git server. That was the part that was missing, not the software part.

Totally 💯

Everything Nostr

you still need merge permissions to run a specific codebase

Qubes has been duscussing this for 7 years. I'd bet they would consider a nostr alternative if someone else maintained it.

https://www.qubes-os.org/faq/#why-do-you-use-github

What's the benefit to using OTS vs PGP signing an ACK that includes the date and time?

Say a vulnerability was merged 1 year ago and it was ACK'd by someone who has since had their PGP compromised. How would you know the ACK was signed ahead of the merge rather than after the key compromise?

Its also a lot more convienent to sign and verify messages as every interaction has to be signed.

Good point.

GiTea isn't a viable option?

What happend to that project prasented at Nostr World?

Great idea, let’s make it happen — I’ll put up 10 zaps for whoever makes it real. 😅

Yeah gotta be done. 👍

Nostr fixes this

wasn't randy working on something like this?

nostr:nprofile1qqswm7386jwj4um7uvc7zgjmkmk3jykxmxvjsxekmqqc4kvmcdtnc2gpzdmhxw309ucnydewxqhrqt338gmrzvpjqy8hwue69uhkwmn0wd68ytn0wfnsg43a6f

Yep nostr:nprofile1qqswm7386jwj4um7uvc7zgjmkmk3jykxmxvjsxekmqqc4kvmcdtnc2gpzpmhxue69uhkummnw3ezumrpdejqzrthwden5te0dehhxtnvdakqdw5jly and he’s STILL on X ffs

How about this alternative? It seems promising... https://github.com/NostrGit/NostrGit

But why nostrGit is host on GITHUB ??

Haha... It should start somewhere! Like, the egg and chicken paradox!

hope they will have time to grow, inside the hell 😅

Beautiful

I think IPFS is better for this

That is actually no joke, because "GitHub, Inc. has been a subsidiary of Microsoft since 2018."

NostrGit

one would think that would have been done by now after 3 years and millions of funding

#gnostr #nostr

The original distributed code 🗿

Devs, listen up. I might have an idea y'all can pull off:

Take the source code to Forjego, fork it, and set it up for Nostr integration with the necessary NIPs in order to pull this off.

Definitely

I agree. Nostr really seems like an ideal fit

Matt, GitHub is not good enough! We must make something better on Nostr! I’ve lost so much of my life to GitHub shenanigans.

bruh get on Radicle: https://radicle.xyz/

It's happening. nostr:npub1s3ht77dq4zqnya8vjun5jp3p44pr794ru36d0ltxu65chljw8xjqd975wz

WHAT ABOUT GITEA?

IT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE

ENJOY THE NOISE

Someone else (who was it, again, I'm starting to lose track 😅 ) is working on a Nostr API for the various git servers, like Github, Gitea, GitLab, etc. and we're going to tap into that for our own OneDev instance.

I think they also want to do a plugin for VS Code, or something.

Found him.

With gitea there is no intergratiom across insrances. You can't take your account with you, there is no shared notification system, etc.

That's where Nostr integration could help. Tie instances with your Npub.

Gitea sold out. Went for for-profit.

Do you say that a structure like github so complex can be replaced by ours? 🤔

nostr:nprofile1qqsgydql3q4ka27d9wnlrmus4tvkrnc8ftc4h8h5fgyln54gl0a7dgspzemhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wvh8xmmrd9skcqgdwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkcmvwljq put up 10 Bitcoin bounty for it.

this link is not easy to follow from amethyst.. I get trapped in primal's browser app

still.. nice bounty

For those interested in a decentralized Git, it's worth reading the project's vision: https://github.com/NostrGit/NostrGit/blob/main/documentation/vision.md

when we have a distributed repository of optional code patches, there will be a Cambrian explosion of implementations...

node runners will select what to run.

we will have a new form of consensus, not a protocol change, but of software compilation
