More than 4.5 billion devices around the world are dependent on two U.S. corporations: Apple and Google.

Apple has a monopoly on the operating system and app distribution.

Google has outsized power over the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and soon full control over app distribution.

Apple has the power to rug users and developers at any given time. The same goes for Android, with the upcoming mandatory developer registration and the progressive closing down of AOSP. Forks like GrapheneOS rely on Android remaining open source.

(The situation is different in China, but control is basically exerted by the CCP.)

What is the way forward?

"Hi, Production will be ending early Nov, followed by QA and shipping after that."

sounds good to me

"We’ve been working closely with the manufacturer to resolve the final details, and we’re happy to share that all FLX1s phones are now being packaged and prepared for shipment to customers. Once this process is complete, the phones, along with their cases and screen protectors will be delivered to our warehouse, where shipping will begin.

After your order ships, tracking information will appear in your order details when you log in. Please note that there may be a short delay before the tracking link becomes visible, as we receive this information from the shipping carrier and it can occasionally take some time to update."

traditionally it's been running linux on commodity hardware. this hasn't been an option with mobile phones. i recently heard the argument (can't find a link) that we shouldn't be focusing on opening the mobile software ecosystem but instead demanding that we can run our own os on the hardware that we buy

I think forking AOSP once google changes it to the point of incompatibility, and going it alone from there. Maybe even having to stick to a release version indefinitely if no resources to maintain.

Hear me out… Symbian os. Back to basics

The herd has been shepherded.

The herd is society.

I'll probably get a seperate phone for interaction with government/companies

You lost in just the first lines. You don’t understand how monopolies work. No need to read the rest.
