It is extremely easy for one bad person with a lot of money to put bad ideas into the heads of hundreds of millions of people, causing them to believe they arrived at the idea themselves.
The only defense against this form of manipulation is critical thinking.
Very few people are capable of it.
Of those who are capable, very few bother to do it, even when it matters.
Only those people who can and do think critically when it matters can be trusted to have ideas that are their own. Everyone else is just doing what they're told, and they don't even know it.
The other defense is to control what you see, by default. Nostr can possibly enable this by only letting you see content from sources you trust and the sources those sources trust. It can become physically impossible to infiltrate a relay built on that kind of filter.
I disagree. Brainwashing (and toxicity, addiction, etc) can be reversed ... it just takes Faith.

However, only a small fraction of people appear to possess this ability, and among those who do, even fewer consistently apply it, particularly when it is most crucial.
Consequently, only those rare individuals who both possess and actively employ critical thinking skills in significant moments can be relied upon to hold genuinely independent ideas. The rest are merely following directives, often without even realizing it.
