Bluesky is experiencing significant growth right now, driven in part by recent changes to Twitter’s blocking system.

Personally, I support Twitter's decision. The previous implementation of blocks was ineffective, as it could easily be bypassed by logging out or creating a new account. Blocks were broken.

Nostr approaches this issue in a more balanced way. Its block or mute features enable both parties to maintain their autonomy. One user can curate their feed as they see fit, while the other is still free to engage with content as they wish. This creates a win-win situation for both sides.

Why are users flocking to Bluesky?

Bluesky operates in similar fashion to Twitter's old policy. Blocking a user on Bluesky prevents interaction and hides the user. Blocked accounts cannot like, reply, mention, or follow the user that blocked them. Their posts, replies, and profile in search will also be hidden. Again, this is all circumvented by using another account.

I prefer Nostr's implementation. How about you?

Can I run bluesky on my server?

I believe so, but I never have done it.

You can but they permission access to the main net and if you run your own relays and appview servers then normal clients can’t connect to or see your content.

Personally IDGAF who sees or comments on my posts, but I understand how some users might feel different. Being able to restrict visibility of your content to people you follow would be a powerful feature for privacy, but you'd have to make sure that you only publish to relays that respect this policy.

I would like to see a feature such as this that allows for a more private Nostr for those that need/want it. The feature would remind me of Google+ Circles.

i first heard that idea from Colby Serpa a year ago

Would be similar to the Facebook privacy feature where your content is only visible to your friends. The problem with Facebook is they took the granularity of their privacy features to a point where it's a tangled, disorganized web of settings that's difficult for some users to navigate.

Nostr clients should have a simple toggle switch restricting visibility to your follows, and relays should respect this policy by only serving your content up to requests signed by nsecs associated with the npubs on your follow list.

Canadian politicians (mostly Liberals but some NDP) have been blocking their own constituents for years. I was blocked when I raised a serious and valid question that my MP didn't like. After being blocked iade several successive accts (after each got blocked a new one made) to either raise serious questions or voice polite displeasure. I even made one that just quoted others announcing they were blocked by that specific MP.

Now, I realize, fuck it... He'll be gone soon and I would much rather ignore his existence (unless he comes to my door, in which case we will have a most pleasant exchange, I'm sure).

Its nice but it gets too commie can’t use it more than 2:30

agree, I think mute is useful if you don't want to see someone or something but blocking is too easy to circumvent to be anything more than a nuisance

nostr is more realistic because people can always find their way to bypass (IT IS public😅)

but I would love to see clients adding their internal layer flavor, i think that would be a sign of nostr clients competency

like you can artificially implement this new X's policy to your client and if you provide such a really good user experience, then not everybody will take the hassle of switching to bypass it

looking forward to see how things will grow on nostr
