My eReader is dying. I thought I'd #asknostr if there are recommendations for a free as in freedom ereader to replace it.

As usual, I'll be zapping useful answers. Kindle and Daylight are DRM spy machines and will not be considered useful answers.

Daylight is a DRM spy machine? That's sad to hear.

Daylight runs an out of date insecure version of android. nostr:nprofile1qqsza748zkamgmw4he4hm2xhwqpxd5gkwju38wqh3twmtshx8kv8xvgppamhxue69uhkgctdw4eju6t09uq3vamnwvaz7tm9v3jkutnwdaehgu3wd3skuep0qyv8wumn8ghj7enfd36x2u3wdehhxarj9emkjmn99uphz3ay also noticed some really alarming things in their privacy policies.

Personally I was annoyed enough that they came around with a bunch of influencers posting drivel but pretending they were honest reviews that I knew it wasn't for me.

It's way too expensive as well IMHO.

very difficult to enter the hardware market

PineNote is cheaper, and looks like a better device to me. Boox looks like the same thing but way cheaper.

hear you.

Need to take another crack at this.

>= pixel 6 + grapheneos current best until they get their new oem hardware deal out.

The devices from china and taiwan have slop os must be replaced.

It seems like the best we can do is buy a raspberry pi and and modules (e-ink screen, gsm modem, etc... ) for anything approximating "open source hardware"

DIY is labor intensive tho.

The latest PI is kinda beefy BTW!

This. Kobo with the custom firmware is great. I've owned 3.

Yep, the one with the buttons on the side is fantastic.

I have I think a Clara. I really like it but any time I highlight it locks up the screen for multiple minutes. Unavoidable because it likes to highlight when I tried to page turn.

The third party firmware may fix that.

kobo sage with koreader and aftermarket magnetic flip cover

I may have to look into this. My failing unit is a kobo, not a sage, and the failure mode is one I suspect could easily be fixed by switching to a new firmware.

koreader doesn't really replace the firmware of the entire device... it's more like an "app." it shows up as a normal book in the kobo's interface and when you open it, it tricks the machine into executing a bunch of code and launches into a newfangled environment. the stuff in there is better, like a real hierarchical file browser that explores the contents of the storage. the reader is also better. if you shut the device off completely and turn it back on you have to go into the "app" again to make it come back.

Even that may work. The problem I have is when I start a highlight the screen locks out all input. It takes minutes or a full reboot to restore. That would be avoidable except I don't have page turn buttons so it often highlights when I tried to turn the page.

I settled on a boox reader.

It's not perfect and it's probably got plenty of things calling home on a regular basis but I was able to install Obtainium and my own apps and just ignore their stuff.

The phone sized one? I always look at them, but end up buying sats instead. They do look cool though.

I got the go, which is slightly bigger than a phone, but not a full-sized tablet.

I'm thinking the Palma 🤏

https://shop.boox.com/products/palma2

In my couple months of useing one, it seems like decent hardware so far. I haven't really had any major issues. I don't see why that one would be any worse. I just wanted a slightly bigger form factor personally.

Yeah I got a huge one now, a Kobo. The small form factor could be nice for traveling. Might be a cool bitchat device too.

For reference, this is the size of the go. Palmable, but not the size of a phone.

How is boox in terms of keeping Android up to date?

I'm trying to migrate to GrapheneOS only for Android devices household wide, so that makes me hesitate to go to an Android ereader because I would have to give up that dream.

Give it up broski 🤣

I'll die on this hill.

Seriously the stress and hassle of self hosting and FOSS everything may kill me, but at least I died owning my own brain instead of giving it over to the advertisers and data brokers.

It's an ereader, you're gmi 🤣

In that aspect, it's not too great. The current device I have is running Android 13, which is about two versions behind. And in terms of security patches, they don't typically push updates super fast if at all. They rely on getting patches through the play store and if you're going mostly graphene and that's obviously not acceptable for your household.

I'm using a Google Tablet with GrapheneOS.

Not bad. I keep my news feeds on there, don't do many books from it.

Dang that looks perfect 👀

How about the PineNote from Pine64? It's fully FOSS software and *some* FOSS hardware.

https://pine64.org/devices/pinenote/

Want so bad, probably the priciest option recommended though and I don't have enough sats.

You're bill cypher, can't you use your powers to just create money? 🤣

I have to convince some mortal to bring me into their realm before I can interact with it. That stupid show spread horrible slander that really cut down the number of willing victims, er I mean partners.

You can also jailbreak the kindle. Just a thought

Kobo runs on Linux and you can replace their crappy software with community-built software.

Remarkable is pretty cool. More of a notebook tool than reader perhaps.

Been using kobos for a long time and now using the Libra 2, I think it's great

Get as close to the Taiwan OEM as possible. There is one company that makes all the e-ink tech.

I recommend real books. They smell good. They feel good. Like women...

I do staged book collecting, some paper and some digital depending. Ereader is impossible to beat for reading while traveling. I can carry 300 books in less space then 1 physical.

True, the travel argument was why I bought a kindle, but I've found that I hate it so much that I now think I'll just accept that I probably won't read the whole book on the plane and I need to plan out which book to bring.

What do you mean by staged?

Meaning that low value to me books may only be digital but books I value more get added as paper copies.

Ah, good policy.

Kobo without account.
