I just found a turtle that was run over on the highway. Her shell is cracked open in so many places—all the way down the middle, across the top and some on the bottom. Her internal organs were visible and fat was squishing out from the gaping cracks, but she's still alive.

It doesn't look good. I had no time to take pics of the way she looked when I found her, but I've never seen a shell shattered this badly with the turtle still alive. Blood loss seems moderate, but significant—hopefully it is just from the damage and not to her internal organs.

No vets in my area will treat her. The best I could do is take her home and piece her shell back together with super glue and tape. My heart is broken for her. She's trying to live, trying to move, but she is in so much pain.

Please send positive thoughts her way.

You're an amazing human

Feed her the best snacks a turtle could want

She is in no condition to eat, but if she makes it, you bet I will.

You're awesome and I hope she'll pull through though, from the way you explained, it would be a miracle. Did the vets give you a reason?

Fingers crossed but if she doesn't get better, please don't let her suffer!

The vets around here are rural and recommended putting her down without even seeing her—she is just a turtle, people eat them.

It was a judgment call to try and treat her considering the severity of the damage. I'm trying to give her the best shot at living. She is still moving her head around, opening her mouth, and sometimes moving her front legs to try and move. She has her wits about her, and her eyes are focused on me when I get near.

I have no idea how, but she's fighting to stay alive. I hope I have made the right decision. There is nothing more I can do for her at the moment. 🙏🏻

Did you get an xray yet?

Sending all the healing energy 🙏🫂

Thank you 🫂🙏🏻💜

Holy crap, I hope they pulls through.

Animals have an amazing capacity to recover from injury.

Just give her time.

Eating and drinking are not crucial for a turtle as they would be for a mammel.

If you happen to have homoeopathic arnica, give it to her.

Good luck and keep us posted!

She didn't make it. Please watch for animals on the road. This was a senseless death.

So sorry to see this.. Thanks for your turtle love..

*** If you ever need to help a turtle cross the road, take them to the side they were going to, or else they will try to cross again.

🫂 💯 Thank you for mentioning this. It is an important tip.

It also helps to pay attention to if the turtle was traveling up or down hill.

Sometimes they will walk up or down the middle of a road just because there's less obstacles on the road because they are trying to get to higher ground, or coming back down from higher ground

Respect you for this.

Their shells can heal back together but if organs were exposed to the outside chances of infection are really high.

You may want to treat the turtle with aquarium anti biotics.

Also special dietary stuff to help the healing process.

If there is a pet shop or aquarium supplies shop within driving distance you'd be best off buying the antibiotics in person, they may also be able to help with which anti biotics to use, whether to use food based ones or a liquid that you add to the water.

Thank you. That was the plan. I am currently located in a very rural area. No one was available even hours away when I found her, and unfortunately she succumbed to her injuries shortly after I gave her emergency care.

I knew there was not much chance of survival due to the severity of her injuries, but I had to do my best.

At least she was able to pass with dignity in a peaceful environment. It is heartbreaking.

I was looking up clove oil or alternatives to make her more comfortable and put her to sleep if necessary when she passed.

Her death was senseless. She was in the middle of the lane. The car swerved to hit her. She was cremated today.

You are brave. Death is hard to witness, senseless death even more so. You put aside the likely heartbreak, or the less likely yet arduous, long road of recovery to help her suffer less and to feel cared for. Poured your attention, ingenuity, and love into her. Admirable, Ava. 🫂💜
