Its actually my favorite Ghibli and overall anime movie.

It follows the character in his two main endevours(his fascination with planes and his love life). It also tells the story of a modernizing Japan that still has a inferiority complex and tries to overcome it.

Spoiler for the ending: It ends tragically as both the love of his life dies and his lifes work gets completely destroyed. But he desides to move on as thats the only thing he can do.

TL;DR: this movie good
