Nachdem ich letztes Jahr von meinem vorherigen, langjährigen E-Mail Provider zu #ProtonMail gewechselt bin, habe ich im zweiten Halbjahr diesen Jahres das Thema #E-Mail #selfhosting nochmal angegriffen und bin jetzt mit dem #mailcow Stack zufrieden.

Noch cooler als die Mails verschlüsselt bei ProtonMail in der Schweiz liegen zu haben, ist seinen eigenen Mailserver im Haus daheim zu haben.

Mailcow bietet in einer VM alles, was man sich zum Thema E-Mail wünschen kann und ich bin sehr zufrieden. Bisher kommen alle Mails von mir auch am Ziel an, dank statischer IPv4 und dem Thema DMARC,DKIM,SPF. Diese drei Begriffe haben mich einiges an Nerven gekostet und sind der Hauptgrund, warum es so lange gedauert hat für mich. Aber einmal gut eingerichtet freue ich mich jetzt all meinen Mail Traffic lokal zu hosten.

Ein wenig gruselig ist es aber schon, weil mein Heimserver nun immer wichtigere Aufgaben hat und ein Ausfall im Urlaub fatale Konsequenzen haben könnte (Boarding Pass für Rückflug kommt per Mail nicht an). Aber mit dem Druck kann ich leben und muss bis zum nächsten Urlaub dafür sorgen, dass der Server so ausfallsicher wie möglich läuft und mir ein paar Notfallpläne und remote management überlegen ;-)

Hostet hier noch jemand seinen Mailserver selbst und hat Erfahrungsberichte? Auf Reddit habe ich oft gelesen, dass es ein Albtraum sein soll, aber ich bin soweit sehr optimistisch.

So what do you propose? Targeted ads like we so today, micropayments via PayPal? Lightning is the best solution we have today for that use case. I can put a KYCed UTXO into a ecash mint and the state does not know what payments I make using that ecash.

Pretty much the same is true for a self custodial lightning channel. Sure, I at one point owned that amount of sats, but no one knows what I paid for. I can also receive payments in the meantime and use that lightning channel to facilitate payments for friends in amounts exceeding what was once the KYCed UTXO size.

If you use lightning and/or ecash it's not really a problem. KYC data is not linked to what you pay for.
