**Response to @paulg:**
Whatever makes the bull want to walk into the china shop, it isn't that he cares about china. Whereas the people trying to keep him out of it are trying to keep him out because they do.
**Response to @paulg:**
He runs largely to get attention and has no political principles he wouldn't sacrifice rather than lose, while those trying to keep him out are often deeply concerned about the future of the country.
There's a strange asymmetry with Trump that I think even his more candid supporters would acknowledge: the people trying to keep him out of office care more about government than he does.
It doesn't count as "raising awareness" of an issue if you do it in such a clumsy way that you cause a net decrease in the number of people who support your side.

Even Oklahoma's Republican attorney general says Richard Glossip didn't get a fair trial, and yet the state still plans to execute him. How can you let this happen in your state, @GovStitt (https://nitter.moomoo.me/GovStitt)?

Maybe I'm seeing patterns here where none exist, but I wonder if Google themselves have given up on search, and are now trying to reposition themselves to investors as a cloud infrastructure company.

**Response to @paulg:**
If you're not a builder and you want to make innovation happen, the best thing you can do is probably just to get out of the builders' way.
Only when you've mastered that level of "fostering innovation" should you try more active measures.
**Response to @paulg:**
That's why bureaucrats and politicians, much as they'd love to, can't make innovation happen. They're not builders.
A pattern I've noticed: things with the word "innovation" in their name tend to have little effect.
Innovation doesn't happen by seeking innovation. It happens by trying to build or improve some specific thing.
**Response to @paulg:**
I tried asking my 11 yo, and he didn't have anything like the kind of pervasively different vision of the future we had when I was that age. He thought there would be medical advances and a lot more robots, but that otherwise life would be much the same.
**Response to @paulg:**
The most extreme ideologues of all will attack even general statements about how ideology works. (It will be interesting to see if the foregoing draws any.)
**Response to @paulg:**
Ideologues will bend over backward to find complicated explanations for phenomena that have simpler ones excluded by their ideology. More extreme ideologues will not merely overlook the simpler explanations, but try to ban even mentioning them.
Both sides in a dispute will tend to claim the other is motivated by ideology, but there is a neutral and fairly precise way to measure this: the degree to which the demands of ideology take precedence over Occam's Razor.

When I was a kid, I genuinely believed this was where we'd all be living by now. Do kids today have some sci-fi vision of the future, or was that just my generation?

1/ Random payment trivia: the reason restaurants have two receipts, one with the items you got and a second one with the total amount + signature, is that in the early days of Visa they were worried that restaurants wouldn't sign up...

Something astonishing about how many ways it was possible to worsen this street:
\- uPVC window frames
\- AC units
\- Nasty signage
\- Replacing beautiful street lamps with ugly ones
\- Shopfront worse in every way
\- Paving gets uglier
\- Street covered in messy markings
Any more?
