An attempt at a definition of elegance: when something compresses well in a complicated way. Or seen from the other direction, when a small number of principles combine to yield something surprisingly complicated.

Whatever is especially distinctive about your life, people will talk about it in order to make conversation. And their experience with it will naturally be more superficial. It's mean to mock them for it. This is normal and harmless.

Wow, humans settled Madagascar at about the same time they settled Iceland.

**RT @Okla_OAG:**

I am very grateful to the U.S. Supreme Court for their decision to grant a stay of execution. I will continue working to ensure justice prevails in this important case.

I came across an email Doug McIlroy sent me in 2009, Lisp's 50th anniversary, explaining how exciting it had been to sit in the audience when John McCarthy first presented it. In those days they still didn't know if recursion would be useful for anything.

Heard an interesting-sounding plane fly over and went out to see what it was. Glad I did, because it was a Spitfire! That doesn't happen in America.

The last coronation was the first time my father saw a television. That's how long it's been.

**Response to @paulg:**

If the whole world is watching, perhaps we can prevent a murder from happening on May 18.

If you follow me, you know I don't ask for retweets. But I'm asking you now. Please help me. Retweet this thread. Tweet about this case yourself. Ask @GovStitt (https://nitter.moomoo.me/GovStitt) to stay this execution until Oklahoma can find a way out of this mess. What's the rush?

**Response to @paulg:**

Whatever you think about the death penalty, surely you agree that it should only be used when it's certain that the defendant is guilty. And surely no one can claim to have that level of certainty if Oklahoma's attorney general doesn't.

**Response to @paulg:**

And the Supreme Court might refuse! They've become so harsh recently that they could well insist that the state kill Richard Glossip over the objections of its own attorney general. Is this messed up or what?

https://nitter.moomoo.me/paulg/status/1654085350535356418#m

**Response to @paulg:**

Now Oklahoma's attorney general has taken the unprecedented step of asking the US Supreme Court to grant a stay of execution. That's right: the state of Oklahoma has joined Glossip’s lawyer in asking the court to prevent the state of Oklahoma from carrying out its own execution.

**Response to @paulg:**

Richard was convicted on the testimony of the actual murderer, Justin Sneed, who made a deal with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty by testifying that Richard told him to do it. Sneed later wanted to recant, but was talked out of it.

**Response to @paulg:**

How did this happen? The usual mix of sloppy police work and corrupt prosecutors determined to win at any cost. The Innocence Project estimates that about 4% of people on death row are innocent. Richard Glossip is one of them.

https://nitter.moomoo.me/paulg/status/1654084445404626945#m

Oklahoma plans to kill Richard Glossip on May 18. The state's own attorney general has said that this would be a "grave injustice," but other people in Oklahoma are determined to go ahead and kill him. Sound crazy? Keep reading; it gets crazier.

Art tip: at a certain point I gave myself a rule when drawing in my sketchbook: it is forbidden to hide the hands, and, if you draw a bad hand you'll redraw it untill it is passable ! (continued)

When one has to look up the precise definition of the Turing Test (as I just found myself doing), perhaps AI has already passed it.

**RT @lreyzin:**

I gave #GPT4 (https://nitter.moomoo.me/search?q=%23GPT4) my complexity theory final exam. It got about 3/4 of the points, which is an A minus. From what I'd read, that's approximately what I expected, but I'm still impressed.
