Orange colored Aluminum #Bitcoin Coaster in the process of being carved!
Here is the process of how these #btc coasters are carved.
Each of these coasters are made from high strength 6061 billet aluminum sheet material, and go through an extensive manufacturing process. First raw material is cut to size and then cleaned up using various end mills and cutting tools. Next, the prepared blanks are sent out for anodizing where the surface is bead blasted to achieve a completely uniform surface finish. They are then dipped in a solvent bath to clean the surface in preparation for anodizing. The anodizing process uses a special chemical bath and precisely regulated electrical current to chemically bond a color dye to the aluminum substrate while simultaneously oxidizing the aluminum for added surface hardness. The surface is then dipped in another chemical bath to seal up the open pores in the metal that were created during the initial process. Anodizing both adds color as well as increases the wear resistance of the metal itself. The now anodized pieces are then shipped back to our shop and loaded back into the CNC machine for final engraving. Due to the hardness of the anodizing, this final engraving process is abnormally hard on tools, and even when using carbide engravers each coaster takes 2 plus hours to complete. Because the base metal is aluminum, and the color process is anodizing, no part of your coaster finish will rust or corrode over time even when exposed to water or alcohol. The pieces are then moved from the CNC machine to the laser engraver, where they are custom marked on the backside adding a truly unique element to each piece. Finally a non-slip ring is added to the back to ensure stability on whatever surface they are placed on.
This isn't just a simple one hour/day process and wanted to share that with everyone!
