My mildly political thought on the upcoming election and bitcoin regarding Mark Carney..Bear with me.
For background..I bought an item today..the finance manager was 24ish. Young for a finance manager. (Though I paid outright for it, not financed)
Me in my dad joke voice: “Man, this process would have been so much more efficient if you took bitcoin.” Less fees, faster, Etc.
Him enthusiastically: “Fuck, I’ll take your bitcoin!”
Me: “Really? You have some?”
Him: “No, but my parents do.” Obviously ETF exposure or something but who knows.
Up until today..I was worried about a Mark Carney win. He openly dislikes bitcoin (dislikes is probably too light an adjective) and has immense clout on the world stage…Twice as much as Trudeau.
I never thought a ban but maybe extremely stringent authoritarian rules for use strangling the adoption up here.
An eye opening moment..Here’s why.
1. This young kid perked right up when i said Bitcoin (something he coveted and just hasn’t taken the step of learning (future coiner)
2. His parents probably don’t know what it is but the own it, and know they own it because its their best performer.
Based on reports between 5-20 % up here have some type of exposure to bitcoin.
Now if youre Mark Carney, How do u tell that kid he cant enhance his future with the only thing that gives him a shot at achieving his financial goals or at least be part of an honest system of money?
How do you tell his parents they cant have or use the best performing thing they have at maintaining their retirement? (Without a stringent set of rules and taxes)
Answer: You don’t (its political suicide)

Yup… almost zero chance when the “official audit” happens some substantial amount of gold is missing. 1) It breaks trust in the institution 2) derivative markets break. Is it there now? Probably not..Will it be? Almost certainly.
