Survival Fire
Fire separates man from beast.
It allows us life. Without fire we would be extinct.
Learn to make Fire now, while you are comfortable and rested. Notnwhen you are on the run and tired, desperate and cold.
Learn to make Fire with what you can find in the wild, in nature. Add to that the tools of modern man like a flint and steel, ferrocerium rod and knife, butane lighter, cotton, fatwood, gum wrapper and AA battery, convex lens, ice, water bottle... learn it all.
Building a fire is an art form. The flame is just a start. At the bottom on dry ground place the finest dry tinder like cotton, fine scrapped bark from cedar trees, steel wool, etc... Then layer very small wood shavings. Add a little bigger as you go up. I like a pyramid style pile with an opening to the tinder for the flame.
Protect it from the wind and rain.
Fire is life.
The tinder will take the flame, and the flame will consume the smaller kindling first and build to consume even big logs or trees.
Like a living creature it seeks out more food/fuel.
Don't let the fire spread from the place you want it. Uncontrolled fire can be destructive and deadly. This is a two edged sword. Fire is a weapon of war as well.
Practice the hard ways until it is easy. The easy ways will be gravy.
Survival Firearms
This subject has been picked apart, repaired and picked apart so many times it is uncountable.
So I will post my short simple ideas on survival firearms.
My first choice for a one gun carry is a .22LR target pistol like the Ruger Mark 2 or the Browning Buckmark. The ammo is light in weight and small in size, and inexpensive compared to center fire cartridges. Universal around the world even in some non permissive countries.
The .22LR is very deadly for size and power, punching beyond its weight.
If you can do so, a four inch threaded barrel and a suppressor allows for very quiet shooting.
Add a small red/green dot optical sight like the UTG and you have a close in sniper of a weapon for hunting and if pressed for defense.
That said, there are many better defensive firearms, like a 1911 in .45acp, and better hunting/defensive weapons like the AR15.
But for one gun, the little target .22LR pistol can do all of it adequately. Easy to conceal and light to carry. 200 rounds ammo weighs less than a cup of coffee.
For a pistol I prefer solid round nose bullets.
Hollow points don't perform well. They absorb energy to deform, robbing that energy that could be damaging the target. .22LR don't have a lot to spare. Go for depth of penatration rather than shallow wide wounds. Bullet placement is key. Sloppy shots might get you killed or make you miss a meal.

The most likely cause of a wide spread long term grid down will be a thermo nuclear weapon, probably a neutron bomb, a "hydrogen bomb" with the outer U238 tamper removed, and detonated at100 miles or so above the continent. Several of these have high probably of a complete technology kill.
Some of us have radio equipment for transmission and reception in the lower frequencies to get information from across the globe. We must protect this equipment against such an attack.
A Faraday Cage is very effective to shield the radio's. A simple metal mesh screen or a wrapping of aluminum foil completely incasing the radio is important. Remember to insulate the radio from the foil by placing it in a zip lock bag, or other non conducting material to keep it away from the foil.
The EMP is a radio wave that when contacting metal generates high voltage and amperage in the metal. If the EMP hits the metal components of the radio like the antenna or circuit board, it can damage the radio beyond normal repair.
The foil acts as a shield conducting the electricity around the radio without touching it.
Prisons are dangerous places.
Sometimes inmates and staff are stabbed by other inmates.
After a particularly brutal round of gang fights and stabbings, the ER doctor called me.
He began by berating me and the fact 8 inmates had been stabbed in two weeks at the prison.
He said he was writing a report to the Secretary Department of Corrections about it.
I advised the doctor that we report via telephone and in writing each stabbing as well as other assaults within 24 hrs.
I then asked him if he knew that the major cause of death in the US was from medical malpractice? He got very quiet. I then advised him that none of my inmates died. I asked him how many of his patients died.
He hung up. I never heard from him again.
The Secretary called me the next day telling me that the doctor had called him.
The Secretary had a lot to say to that doctor about not practicing law enforcement and we would not practice medicine.
