Here’s a throw back #[0] to when we met 14 years ago in 2009 at Personal Democracy Forum (PDF) and now I’m working with #[1] leading up product for Nos.social (Nostr) and Planetary.social (SSB) and in Uvita, Costa Rica for #Nostrica. Democracy & tech still our ongoing challenge and focus.
#Nostrica notes: Pay to play models (aka paid promotion, unlabled ads) are ripe for abuse & negative impacts of all kinds. This is a dark pattern or just bad pattern to not replicate from Big Social.

Every once and awhile a landmark book comes out that you can tell will affect all generations present for it. Congrats Angela Saini! Pick up The Patriarchs, social science writing the world sorely needs to see more clearly. 🙏🏽

March is Women’s History Month which is a good reminder of the work we need to do, and the learning we need to take in, so women feel safe on Nostr, or any digital communication medium.
Related to this: a core principle in urban public space design — a safe public space is directly correlated with seeing fully representative use by women e.g %50 use. That only happens when more representative research, participation, creation, and review is done in an egalitarian way.
Highly recommend The Patriarchs, a new book that just came out yesterday in the US and today in Europe by one of the best journalists I’ve ever read. This is kind of a trilogy for Angela Saini. Her prior books were: Inferior, on the invention and myths of race pseudoscience, and Superior, on the invention and myths of male superiority pseudoscience.

#[1] this is one big reason why Nostr doesn’t sustain usage… it lacks sufficient content moderation/curation to support different cultural groups use and needs to gather safely.
