In 1956, Colin Wilson, a young and ambitious writer, became an overnight sensation with the publication of The Outsider.

The book, an exploration of alienation and existentialism, resonated deeply with readers in a post-war world grappling with identity and meaning. However, the myth surrounding Wilson’s rise to literary fame was as captivating as the book itself. Living in London, Wilson wrote during the day at the British Museum Reading Room and slept rough on Hampstead Heath at night, a testament to his determination and unconventional approach to life.

The Outsider examined figures like Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, and Van Gogh, exploring the struggles of individuals who defy societal expectations to search for deeper truths.

Borobudur Temple Compounds

This famous Buddhist temple, dating from the 8th and 9th centuries, is located in central Java.

It was built in three tiers: a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, the trunk of a cone with three circular platforms and, at the top, a monumental stupa. The walls and balustrades are decorated with fine low reliefs, covering a total surface area of 2,500 m2.

Around the circular platforms are 72 openwork stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha. The monument was restored with UNESCO's help in the 1970s.

ON THIS DAY, November 18th, 2002, AUDIOSLAVE released their self-titled debut album through Epic Records.

https://youtu.be/7QU1nvuxaMA

"It's subtle but telling that the cover of Audioslave's eponymous debut is designed by Storm Thorgerson, the artist behind Pink Floyd's most iconic album sleeves. Thorgerson and Roger Dean epitomised the look of the '70s, the era of supergroups, which is precisely what Audioslave is," said Steven Thomas Eirwine in his review of Audioslave's debut.

When announced, the collaboration between Rage Against the Machine, minus Zack de la Rocha and former Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell, drew gasps as the blindsided fanbase of both groups uttered a collective, "didn't see that coming!"

All too often, when supergroups are formed, the whole is less than the sum of its parts. In this respect, Audioslave defied convention, producing a debut record that sounded classic and fresh but, more importantly, had the energy and conviction of a going concern rather than an exercise in musical revisionism or a stopgap until their respective bands reformed.

The opening track, "Cochise," thrusts and grooves its way down a road well-trodden by Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath but with a contemporary feel. It sets the tone for the rest of the album, which trades in heavy, powerful riffage that cascades over rumbling bass lines and thumping colossal drums.

Subsequent tracks such as "Gasoline" and "Shadow On The Sun" continue to mine a similar vein, the latter climaxing spectacularly in a storm of throbbing guitars and broken-glass vocals.

The second single, "Like a Stone," was a game-changer, capturing the zeitgeist of the early 2000s. It was one of the mellowest pieces Tom Morello, Brad Wilk, and Tim Commerford had committed to tape. It beautifully demonstrates their dexterous musical ability to tap into all aspects of the sonic spectrum, a talent only barely hinted at with Rage Against The Machine's venomous, bouncing attack. It showed a commitment and willingness to venture into uncharted waters and separate themselves from their former affiliations.

The fourth single, "I Am the Highway," truly demonstrates how diverse a road Audioslave were willing to take. It is a beautiful ballad that never loses its hard emotional edge, avoiding even the vaguest hint of saccharine cringe. The album is laced with the unmistakable energy and joy of a group of musicians finding their sound for the first time, which is surprising when considering the backgrounds of those involved.

By the early 2000s, Cornell, Wilk, Morello, and Commerford were industry veterans, having traversed the alternative rock boom of the '90s. To hear them reinvent themselves in such a convincing and exuberant way leaves the listener in no doubt that all involved had a lot left in the tank and more to offer. Audioslave's debut is feel-good stuff, the sound of a rejuvenating artistic vision and all that can go right when the Rock N Roll planets collide.

Jim Morrison, the enigmatic frontman of The Doors, was not just a rock icon but a poet, philosopher, and provocateur whose legacy continues to burn bright.

https://youtu.be/EQfr-BtcDII

Born on December 8, 1943, in Melbourne, Florida, Morrison’s early life as the son of a naval officer was marked by frequent moves and a rebellious spirit.

His passion for literature and philosophy shaped his artistic vision, and after attending UCLA’s film school, he joined forces with Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore to form The Doors in 1965.

With his hypnotic baritone voice and electrifying stage presence, Morrison embodied the counterculture spirit of the 1960s.

The release of Light My Fire in 1967 catapulted the band to stardom, turning Morrison into a cultural icon overnight. The Gold Record party at Delmonico’s wine cellar in New York City celebrated this meteoric success, a testament to Morrison’s ability to captivate audiences with his blend of sensuality and mystique.

His lyrics, often inspired by poetry and mythology, elevated rock music into an art form, challenging societal norms and inviting listeners to explore the edges of their imagination.

Though his life was cut tragically short in 1971 at the age of 27, Morrison’s influence endures, immortalized in the music and words he left behind.

His image remains a symbol of freedom, rebellion, and the relentless pursuit of artistic truth.

You can’t be a student of the Stoics without reading the Stoics. Beyond the quotes, beyond even the obvious well-known Stoic texts you have to really read the Stoics.

The Penguin Classics translation of Seneca’s Letters of a Stoic is great, but you’re missing out if you stop there—he has hundreds more letters that have been published than what’s in the Penguin book. He wrote many essays, including four that we have on the topic of grief, alone.

There are so many great collections of his writings: On The Shortness of Life. How To Die. How To Keep Your Cool. Hardship & Happiness. (All these titles available at Painted Porch, by the way.) And that’s not even getting into the fact that Seneca was the most famous playwright of his day and that many of these survive to us as well.

Epictetus is more than just the Enchiridion, you know. The Enchiridion is a handbook, a kind of greatest hits collected by his student Arrian. A fuller sense of the slave turned philosopher is available in what’s known as Discourses (you can get both books in this Penguin edition). But did you know that some of the speeches of Musonius Rufus, the teacher of Epictetus, also survive? They’re collected in a small but wonderful book called That One Should Disdain Hardships, translated by Cora E. Lutz.

And what of Marcus Aurelius? We’ve talked before about the importance of reading multiple translations. Gregory Hays is our favorite (leather edition here) but there are other great editions, like Robin Waterfield’s annotated Meditations that will give every student of the Stoics a fuller understanding. There is also a collection of letters that Marcus Aurelius wrote to his beloved teacher Fronto, which you can read some 1,900 years after they were written.

Seneca himself said we had to linger over the works of the master thinkers. Marcus Aurelius said he learned from another one of his teachers to never be satisfied just getting the gist of things. He meant that we have to read deeply, not just stay at the surface or with the popular texts. This is great advice not just for the study of Stoicism but for all things. It’s a torch General James Mattis (a fellow Stoic and author of a great book called Call Sign Chaos) picked up when he said that someone who hasn’t read deeply and extensively on a subject can be said to be functionally illiterate.

Don’t be that.

Be well-versed.

Be well studied.

Read these books.

ANCIENT GREEK SYMBOL 🇬🇷

The Vergina Sun,Panhellenic sun(aka "Vergina Star") is a symbol that was widely used by the Ancient Greeks. Although the Vergina Sun is a Panhellenic symbol, it became famous because of the Macedonians, who use it as a symbol of the Argeadian dynasty in the Kingdom of Macedonia.

The typical Vergina Sun consists of 16 rays. We can also see him with 12 or even 8 rays of the Sun. The Sun with sixteen rays represents the following: The 4 rays represent the 4 elements of nature, EARTH - SEA - FIRE - AIR and the remaining 12 rays represent the 12 Gods of Olympus.

Vergina's Sun, by ownership, symbolizes something virginal. That is why we usually see this ancient Greek symbol, in the virgin goddess Athena. But in several other cases, he can also be identified with the god Apollo.

The Sun of Vergina was a common symbol of ancient Greece and we find it on coins, vases, frescoes and statues, long before the Macedonian kingdom and the Argead dynasty.

Sixteen and Eight Star Suns are featured on Macedonian and Hellenistic coins and shields of the Period. There are also a number of depictions of Athenian Hoplites carrying an identical sixteen-pointed symbol on their armour, from the 6th BC. century, as well as in coins, from insular to mainland Greece, such as in Corfu, a find of the 5th BC. century, Locris, 4th BC century.

The Pythagoreans swore by TETRAKTYS.

TETRAKTYS, means four edges, i.e. the isosceles cross. With the symbolism of TETRAKTYOS, the Pythagoreans codified their knowledge and opinions, for their perceptions of the Universe and the World. As the oath says, there are certain "rhizomes", which constitute (the root) the source of Nature.

These are the 4 elements of which - according to the Greeks - the Universe is made up. These are: FIRE, AIR, OCEAN, EARTH. At each of the four edges of the cross, an element is also placed hierarchically.

With the vertical axis of the cross (FIRE – GAIA) we separate the MALE gods from the FEMALE Goddesses. With the horizontal axis (AER – OCEAN) we divide gods according to HEAVENLY and EARTHLY action.

Then, in each quadrant, we draw 3 rays, one for each God according to what it belongs to. We end up like this, with 12 rays for the gods and 4 for the rhizomes. A total of 16 rays, resulting in the well-known 16-ray sun.

This whole "shape" is surrounded circularly by ETHER which is the 5th rhizome or 5th body, the "circular" as they called it or PENTEUSIA.
