Information to ponder.
According to CME Group, confirmed by several sources, on March 28, 2025, there was a large position of about $14 billion in April gold futures contracts.
The position, representing more than 45,000 new contracts, suddenly appeared at the end of the trading month, at a time when most speculators would normally have already moved their positions to avoid physical delivery obligations.
To explain.
The situation is actually very interesting and not quite usual for the gold market, against the backdrop of how the stock market has collapsed.
What's the gist of it?
On the CME (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) on March 28, 2025, someone (an unknown major player) opened a huge position in April gold futures - worth about $14 billion. That's over 45,000 contracts.
Why it's weird.
Gold futures are largely a speculative instrument. Usually big players "rollover" their positions to the next month in advance, so as not to get to the actual delivery of physical gold.
But here it is the opposite - in the last week before the expiration of futures - someone specifically went into April, where the real delivery of gold is possible at expiration.
What does that mean?
Well, it looks like
someone is actually preparing to take $14 billion worth of physical gold;
or it is a powerful speculative move to put pressure on the market, create a shortage or provoke a price rise;
or it is an attempt to test the liquidity of the physical gold market.
Why it matters.
If a player really demands delivery - the exchange or its counterparties will have to find and give a huge amount of physical gold. And if there is not enough gold - it can create chaos in the market, I can't say for sure, but this is not a standard case for the gold market.
Bottom line:
This is either preparing for a global crisis and taking gold out of the system.
Or a game of price growth.
Either it's a test of the strength of the gold market.
