消費者庁は２０２５年度、コンビニエンスストアを活用した食品寄付の実証事業に乗り出す。
食べることができても売らない食品を、物価高などで十分に食品を手に入れられない人たちに無償で提供する。コンビニなど食品小売業で年間５０万トン近く発生する食品ロスの削減につなげる狙いもある。
無償提供するのは、コンビニ各社が独自に定める「販売期限」を超えた弁当やサンドイッチ、スイーツなど。
販売期限は商品を交換・廃棄するタイミングで、安全に食べられる消費期限や、おいしく食べられる賞味期限より数日～２時間程度短く設定されており、期限を超えても食品としての品質や安全性に問題はない。
実証事業では、たとえば棚に並ぶサンドイッチが期限を迎えると、店員が専用アプリに「サンドイッチ５個」などと写真を添えて登録し、店舗近く（半径３５０メートル以内）に住む無償提供の対象者に通知する。
希望者はアプリで先着順のクーポンを取得した後、店舗に出向き商品を受け取る。
