I just upgraded my LineageOS phone to Android 15. It looks the same. I don't even know what changed.

In a few years, this will enable creative people to do all sorts of things on their phone, which is awesome. Think of the potential, people from less well off countries who usually only have a smartphone can use professional authoring software, for free!

Look at my two babies look all nice and pretty and stuff! ๐Ÿง

I see two different changes here: (1) move everything to /usr and (2) make /usr read-only. I think they should be approached separately, with the read-only part being optional.

I understand the desire for read-only system images, as it comes with a lot of advantages, but I'm concerned about devices with little storage space. Who would hand-craft /usr images to make them fit?

This may be old news, but I just heard that there will be paid extended support of Windows 10 once it goes end of life this October, even for private customers.

Do you think people will do that or will they blindly switch to Windows 11?

Or even... switch to Linux? ๐Ÿฅบ

**I converted my gaming PC from BTRFS to EXT4 and this happened:** (I'm not even kidding)

โœ… Steam startup issues fixed

โœ… Wine startup issues fixed

โœ… Weird system freezes gone

โœ… Vastly improved storage performance

โœ… System feels 100x more responsive

I used to be a huge fan of BTRFS, but *boy* does it feel good to be back on EXT4. I guess new isn't always better.

I think I'm ditching #GrapheneOS for #LineageOS.

The slight performance hit due to hardening is noticable and very annoying.

Like apps being stuck at the "Installing..." stage for more than a minute.

SSDs are cool and all, but I kind of miss the hard drive noises when commanding a large file operation.

To everyone who considers themselves a fan of Flatpaks:

I just installed a single app (Fractal) and it now occupies two and a half gigabytes on my sixteen gig tablet.

Are you sure this is the right way to disrtribute software?

Day 5 of attempting to daily drive postmarketOS Linux on a OnePlus 6T:

๐Ÿ“ธ I decided to leave my Android phone at home today, and I almost didn't miss it at all! The only thing I missed was the ability to snap quick pictures since the camera driver doesn't work yet, which is also the reason why there are no pictures today.

๐Ÿ“‹ At this time, some minor annoyances begin to show. For example, it's really difficult to copy/paste text because not all applications support long-press actions like on Android. And when taking a screenshot, it is copied to the clipboard. To send it to someone, the keyboard must be switched to "terminal" mode in order to press CTRL+V to paste the image, because, again, pasting by long-pressing doesn't work (yet).

๐ŸŒ I didn't do much with my phone except for messaging and browsing the web, both work really well on pmOS. I can't really explain why, but even on such a small screen, having a regular desktop Firefox to work with makes a big difference. It's just so much better.

๐Ÿ–ฑ๏ธ I also tried out some typical desktop applications like GIMP, Krita, LibreOffice, Blender and even Godot Engine. All of which work in theory, but have varying issues with scaling and touch input. But it's cool to be able to just launch Blender on your phone.

๐Ÿ”‹ One thing I can't get over is the insane battery life. The OnePlus 6T with Linux lasts way longer than my Pixel 4a with Android.

Would anyone be interested in a detailed blog post on how it is to use #postmarketOS for everyday things? Or should I just keep posting bits and pieces here?

nostr:npub16r0tl8a39hhcrapa03559xahsjqj4s0y6t2n5gpdk64v06jtgekqdkz5pl I'm copying about 400 GB of steam games from one drive to another. I understand that the system would be slow to load things, but the UI and the mouse should always be responsive.

Here is one manโ€™s nightmare: https://nytimes.com/2022/08/21/technology/google-surveillance-toddler-photo.html โ€“ donโ€™t let that be you. Turn this feature off if you opted into the beta for Google Files today.

Thanks to BasicCatBR on Twitter for alerting us to this new feature so we could let our community know.

Here's how to turn it off:

nostr:npub1wjwj5r9ytyhgg7nwmy75t8xrhphw6c8kq94fuv0qdjg6g0fruffq02ue5t I hate how file management on Android is evolving, anyways. I can't properly browse directories because the app is trying it's hardest to hide the fact that filesystems have a tree shape. I don't know why they are doing that. Does anyone know a good open source file explorer for #Android?

I wish there was a high end #Smartphone with a rectangular screen. I hate those rounded corners. And they are getting rounder every year, too.

Ugh, I really love #Valve and the #SteamDeck but today was just one of these days... My #ArchLinux #PC just doesn't open the steam overlay anymore, which is really annoying when using a controller.

Then I tried to play some #Everspace 2 using Remote Play on the Steam Deck. It wouldn't let me set the 1280x800 resolution, and apparently the game crashes when opening the menu. Well, I tried to use the #SteamLink app which didn't crash but just went back to the main menu.

Alright, I thought, and went to install Everspace 2 locally on the Deck, which went quick because of the new local network transfer feature. While that was downloading, I saw that there is a software update. Hoping that things would improve, I applied it immediately. The system rebooted and it didn't resume the transfer... BECAUSE THE SD CARD WAS GONE.

It actually destroyed the filesystem on the SD card and I had to reformat. Not that big of a deal because I could hust redownload everything, but...

Jeez Valve... fix your stuff. They did some amazing stuff, but they really need to focus on bugfixes more.
