“As excess cash buffers have largely been exhausted, we are closely monitoring consumers whose incomes have not kept pace with inflation,” the bank wrote in its presentation.

There are some pockets that might stand out. The bank anticipates net charge-offs of about 0.65 percentage points in auto lending in 2024, nearly double the 0.33% rate in 2019.

That is partly due to a shift toward customers arranging their own auto loans versus getting them via dealers, and also a shift toward people taking out loans for used cars as opposed to new ones.

What is working for America’s biggest bank isn’t necessarily synonymous with what many people might want to see out of the economy, particularly in an election year.

Consumers overall might be getting a fairly clean bill of health from their lenders. Whether they are excited about that clean bill of health is another matter.

The broad crypto industry rallied hard soon after the White House threatened to veto the bill that would let banks custody digital assets. And now it’s making a big difference, with Congress voting strongly for it, the White House pulling their veto threat, etc.

While it’s right to pass that bill and let banks custody them if they want, it’s sad to see that the crypto industry response to that was like 100x bigger than the response to all of the anti-privacy stuff that has been happening.

The desire of people in the industry for banks to help pump their bags is way bigger than their desire to pave a way for freedom tech in general.

Dustin Rudiger, a 31-year-old from San Jose, California, said he managed to get in and out before the plunge. He was on vacation in Japan when he noticed chatter on Reddit about Roaring Kitty and GameStop. He said he invested roughly $25,000 in the stock and then quickly sold, profiting about $10,000.

Rudiger posted about his gains on Reddit, but got a lot of blowback from others about the need to “hold on for dear life” (known online as “hodl”) or to have “diamond hands,” references from the 2021 meme-stock boom about staying put in risky assets for the long-run.

“Ninety-nine percent of them are not planning to do that. They’re planning to sell when it’s high, they just want everyone else to not sell,” Rudiger said. “They just want to make money, which we all do.”

Today, those “Reddit Raiders,” once flush with time and cash from pandemic-era stimulus and work policies, are largely back to work and bearing the burden of higher interest rates. Some got in late, and even with the latest surge are sitting on losses.
