Interested in All Of The Things. Things I do: landscape, storm and protest photography, paragliding, climbing, border and human rights activism. Intellectual hobbies I watch from the sidelines: science, security/privacy, online sociality and general internet theorizing. You can write to me via my website, though Signal gets the quickest response. Welcome newcomers. You'll like it here, but give it some time.

So Gavin Newsom has a body double too? Always does look kind of like he's made of wax.

Yeah, I asked the California state Attorney General to at least have a presence here. They have YouTube, Facebook and Xitter links on their newsletter, even though they are currently suing Google and are certainly well aware of how problematic the others are.

I'm actually serious about that! I'm going to ask to buy the account and see if I get a response. Or maybe tell them that I'll be interested in buying it once they hit 1500 followers, and how much would that cost?

I love baiting scammers.

If I get a good response, I'll post screencaps.

nostr:npub145umrlfuf9cppkgkzf08438peevqs8lqrswsu27w3txkeh4n2yysathq7w The last step is a hangover from the Twitter algorithms, which - thanks to a litany of stupid small decisions originally designed to help all real users - gave an advantage to those who had far more followers than those they followed.

A high ratio was also seen as a status symbol because it resembled that of genuine celebrities.

The algorithmic feeds hid those changes from Toad to Schmoe. You got to see Schmoe's tweets because you were following them, but you thought it was because they were popular.

Yes, there are several marketplaces for such accounts. The more public-facing side is for big ones - 25k followers and up - but there are plenty that are used as sock-puppets for misinformation that have a few thousand followers.

nostr:npub1cne6gvqcju47v4uw80ps2ksctxncrw8mq8t07ksmjf4pqmsh7uaqxlmuve

Oh, now this makes complete sense. With an algorithmic timeline that puts random people in your feed, you may not even realize that you are following the JoeSchmoe account.

I think this also explains the obvious bot followers I've been getting tons of lately on Twitter and Instagram, despite not posting there. E.g. "40567Claire" (usually with a cute Asian woman pfp) who has 756 followers, but only 8 posts and follows only 17 people (i.e. the ones who haven't been unfollowed yet).

Sometimes they also send a personal message like "hi, can we be friends?" I've wanted to see what their grift was so I've tried writing back with "hello, let's be friends. What do you like to do for fun?" expecting to be told about how much fun they're having investing in NFT's or Dogecoin. They never responded, probably because the point was just to use a personal message to increase the likelihood that I would follow them back.

Next time I'll write to @ 04557Claire and ask how much to buy the account. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Can you explain the last step, about the elite ratio? I'm trying to get my head around this. Also, once they have it all built, how/where do they sell it?

I guess it's not surprising that it would be happening on the fedi too, since clout chasers gonna clout chase no matter where they are, but I wonder what the relative values are of buying one of these accounts on the various platforms? Like, is there a dark web marketplace somewhere to comparison shop ๐Ÿ˜‚

I also wonder what all the people who followed "@ toads every hour" or whatever think of suddenly noticing that they're following "@ Joe Schmoe" instead.

Has anyone done a "Musk reacts to" version of the "Downfall/Hitler Reacts" video meme?

So much possibility.

I think the California Lottery Winner's Handbook might need a little updating, listing Donald Trump as an example of how to manage money. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

(No I didn't win the MegaMillions.)

Ugh, post-event blues are a thing! We finished the 2023 season at nostr:npub1l9u6wukxj7ywehjcskdl37ssaz94sgvjd77stkauc7pru0xrv4aqgfqn48 a couple days ago and I should be stoked because we had an excellent season, but everything feels super blah and unmotivating. Ugh.

I'm headed to Santa Barbara to finish my #paragliding certificate in a couple days, so that should pick me up ๐Ÿช‚

nostr:npub145umrlfuf9cppkgkzf08438peevqs8lqrswsu27w3txkeh4n2yysathq7w I see northing morally wrong here just customers getting what they paid for.

nostr:npub174kprqhgvedx2k8zfnxf224uz3779tje2n6t8ek2weaufjpqcnusksu77q

What's morally wrong is companies being able to deny you what you already paid for. But my bigger worry about these things is the ability of threat actors to take control of these cars for malicious purposes.

My first thought was to wonder how many more steps it would take from unlocking FSD to pwning the vehicle remotely. If not this, then it's just a matter of time before someone figures that one out.

nostr:npub1hy4kzcakaf5jyamv0d7nwru0sfkte49vs76csm222hltz27yqyqqw6fw8v

Yeah, I can think of a few, one in particular, who fit that pattern. When I nonjudgmentally asked why, they had a reasonable excuse, but the person in question has enough cachet that their followers would follow them here in a heartbeat. I also asked if there were a red line they had in mind, after which point they would bail, but got no response to that. They are someone with an extremely high follower account, so I think there's some vanity involved. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Well that was weird. I awoke to what seemed to obviously be #earthquake shaking at 3am, felt a strong wave roll through, followed by several seconds of mild shaking.

Posted that here, then went to look at the USGS page and...nothing. Half an hour later, still nothing, so I deleted the post and went to sleep. This morning, still nothing.

I thought maybe it had been some local explosions big enough to shake the house. Nope. Not a sonic boom-type shake either. We don't get those super sonic jets here anyway.

Now I wonder it if was such a vivid dream that, while it woke me up in fact, the original experience of being awakened by an earthquake was itself part of the dream? This is frickin' weird.

Border patrol treatment of migrants is bad in Texas. It's bad in Arizona too. The humanitarian aid groups mentioned are the ones I work with when I am there during the rest of the year.

No matter what you think about current immigration policy or what it should be, you have to be a monster to think treating human beings this way is OK.
