Bitcoin Transaction Fees and UTXO Management

- when bitcoin blocks are full, highest fee transactions are confirmed first

- your bitcoin wallet may show a single balance but the reality is that it is made of many different unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs)

- when you make a bitcoin transaction your wallet will select as many UTXOs as necessary to reach the amount of bitcoin you wish to send

- onchain transaction fees are calculated based on size in bytes not the amount of sats sent

- the more utxos required on the input side the higher the fee paid

- from a cost perspective you want to consolidate utxos, fewer utxos with larger amounts

- consolidation has privacy tradeoffs though: you link any UTXOs you consolidate as owned by the same person + larger UTXOs mean you will dox more of your stack to anyone you pay in the future

Therefore you want to reduce the number of UTXOs you have while being mindful of the privacy concerns.

Lightning Transaction fees are calculated differently: based on the amount in sats sent. Opening lightning channels when fees are low can enable you to save money in the future when fees rise. 🤙

I need to find something I could sell for sats.

I'm a videographer, fully booked and things are going great with my clients. I've got a QR code printed on my invoices but I doubt I'm going to receive sats for my services anytime soon as my clients are medium size agencies.

I've got that itch to be paid in sats... thought I about selling stock footage (pretty niche and would need to shoot a ton to get enough attention)

Do you guys have that same need? Are you able to exchange your service for sats? If so, how?

Looking for something related to my current Robinhood pfp.

I identify with Robin Hood because he was not an anti-capitalist who stole from the rich, he actually stole from the scammers and used the proceeds to buy nice uniforms for his merry men.

Like Robin Hood, I extract from crypto scammers and use the proceeds to support developers, entrepreneurs, artists & educators building ethically on Bitcoin layers (and bitcoin adjacent like Nostr)

I’ve been told I look like him a lot, and I don’t take myself too seriously.

(A good way to stay humble while stacking sats is to choose a pfp of a silly character.)

Until we solve all the scaling challenges (both technical and economic) and ux challenges, a lot of people will prefer a custodial LN wallet. If they’re going to make that choice, an ecash-based wallet is more private. Still custodial, but more private.

Nice cool feature about cashu is how easy it is to spin up. So you can uncle-jim a private, custodial wallet for your family/friends/community (you manage the channels, etc)
