I lead technology at ProPublica and write speculative fiction. This is a personal account. Every day, I write about tech, democracy, and society at https://werd.io. "At least two digital media companies are exploring the fediverse as a way to take more control over their referral traffic and onsite audience engagement." The Verge and 404 Media will both support ActivityPub and the fediverse. #Fediverse https://werd.io/view/665233a622e6230d5c0d69d2

The biggest issue that’s turning up for me about AI is not the models, hallucinations, etc, but how leakily AI-enabled services share potentially sensitive data with third parties. Using AI to process or read aloud a confidential document? Guess what, a third party you have no control over has a copy of it now.

"This is a stranger story of how some small-time philosophers captured some big-bet billionaires, who in turn captured the philosophers—and how the two groups spun themselves into an opulent vortex that has sucked up thousands of bright minds worldwide." #Technology https://www.wired.com/story/deaths-of-effective-altruism/?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

"The observation room at Boeing Field offers what is arguably America’s best real-time window into our vast network of privately run deportation flights, a system that has generated troubling reports of passenger mistreatment and in-flight emergencies." #Democracy https://www.propublica.org/article/seattle-boeing-field-ice-deportation-flights?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

Holy wow - the Mastodon community really came through. This is huge, and makes a massive difference for our reporting. Thank you everyone - and thank you for showing how active and engaged this network is!

"Microsoft's data centers in West Des Moines, Iowa guzzled massive amounts of water last year to keep cool while training OpenAI's ChatGPT-4. [...] This happened in the midst of a more than three-year drought, further taxing a stressed water system that's been so dry this summer that nature lovers couldn't even paddle canoes in local rivers." #AI https://futurism.com/critics-microsoft-water-train-ai-drought?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

Which do you prefer: Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads?

The crossing guards in my neighborhood are traffic cops. Who, this being America, are armed. The absolutely batshit crazy image of that aside, I really hate the idea of guns and armed people being normalized around children. Really unsettling.

Good overview. I think European tech regulations have been broadly good, establishing the anti-competitive and pro-privacy rules that US legislators have failed to enact. If we could only all be so protected. #Technology https://www.cjr.org/the_media_today/eu_dsa_dma_regulations_big_tech.php?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

I’m starting to think my networking strategy of “wandering the floor randomly with a bewildered look on my face” may not be entirely working

I'd love to understand what prompted Automattic to offer a hosting plan for $38K. On one level, I love it - it lasts for 100 years! and I love Automattic! - but I can't justify this, and I'm not quite sure who it's for? If this is marketing, what are the goals? #Technology https://wordpress.com/blog/2023/08/25/introducing-the-100-year-plan/?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

People who are critical of my father because he talks in a different way and doesn’t act like an average American are some of my least favorite genre of people.

Black faces are overrepresented in databases used to train AI for law enforcement - and some facial recognition software used in this context fails 96% of the time. This practice is an accelerant for already deeply harmful inequities. Time to ban it. #AI https://finance.yahoo.com/news/every-reported-case-where-police-194117982.html?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

None of this looks like it comes from 1969. Although some of the content is outdated today, the style is far more modern - this feels like something straight from the internet era. Fascinating and relentless (I couldn't watch the whole thing). #Culture https://cabel.com/2023/08/06/turn-on-found/?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

How do you make a movie about Oppenheimer without mentioning that over 200,000 civilians were killed by the two atomic bombs that were subsequently used in the war?

nostr:npub1qg48cy9nkrm0pkeuz7e9zrzeq2n6lnlwyn30u9zd0xe07g9qvras00augv I was just joking with someone about this the other day. My software was used by movements all over the world to rally and organize for justice. I only was able to get out of debt and find some retirement savings when I took a left turn into VC-funded startups for a while.

And now here I am in non profit open source, and, well, those savings were fun to have while they lasted.

Not that I did it for the money. But still.

Every time I take an Acela I’m reminded that business class train travel in the US is worse than economy train travel in Europe. I paid $200 for a ticket to NYC with a reserved seat and I’m standing in the vestibule because another train failed. Ugh, Amtrak. And ugh, America, for not investing in this properly.

Really interesting to see people from across industries and disciplines fight for better conditions at the same time. I'd say it's promising; even hopeful. I would like to see them all succeed, and for more to follow. #Labor https://www.freightwaves.com/news/ups-pilots-wont-fly-if-teamsters-strike?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

It’s a good T-shirt and I will not be reading replies to the contrary.
