There was a definite chill in the air this morning,
My hands were cold as I walked the dogs.
Summer is changing to fall.
Autumn will be glorious,
but winter is coming.

You know your a homesteader when:
On a walk this morning with my husband and the dog, I pause to admire a fence he built for the new pasture.
"Honey, that's a good looking fence."

We got some soft, steady rain this afternoon. Good for the garden. Good for the grass.
Community and the parallel economy:
When we brought home our milk cow last spring Helen asked if she could have a quart of milk to taste. Ted and Helen are the oldest couple at our small church in their mid-80's. They are good friends, so that quart became a half gallon that we share with them weekly from our abundance.
Ted asked if he could pay for the milk. No. Just share your extras when you have abundance.
Ove the summer they have shared asparagus, blueberries, blackberries, rhubarb and honey. All things that we don't have on our farm.
Ted and Helen heat their home primarily with wood. Harvesting wood for the winter is a challenge at their age so the church community pitches in to make sure they are well-stocked.
This morning we brought them seasoned firewood and picked apples from their trees.
This is community.
Sharing abundance.
A parallel economy.

Nobody likes to see how the sausage is made...
unless it is with farm raised pastured pork and home grown herbs.

Graduation day! We processed 29 meat birds this morning.
Rotationally pastured, fed organic feed soaked in grass-fed raw milk. We further supplemented with clabber from the same milk.
Average weight was 5 1/2 lbs.

Time to milk the cow.
Good morning. Rosie.
Good morning, Fiat Farm.

I spend a lot of time observing our farm. Trying to work with Creation.
I appreciate what you do.
Betty is broody.

Squash bug eggs. The bane of summer gardeners.
I squish them between my thumbnails. If I am vigilant they will not overtake the garden.
Good morning, Fiat Farm.

Actually, one cow and some sheep, but she is a milk cow giving birth in December so the demands are high. We want to make sure she has all she needs.
100 bales of hay. The milk cow has to be fed through winter.

Just over 4 weeks old, Duke, is growing by leaps and bounds.
We are all eager for our other cow to give birth and Duke would enjoy a friend to play with.
The red cows are South Poll/Low-line Angus and thrive on pasture.
Good morning, Fiat Farm.
