the only one I remember I wanted to work on old morrowind was a sixth house mod.

for a fan work, it was pretty good, added decent lore.

then the game crashes when I try to ascend further.

I think most of the mods could be ported over, but the people who made them, if they’re still active, relied enough on the Script Extender that they don’t want to re-learn how to mod.

And, iirc, the creators of openMW don’t want to add kludge from the Script Extender to make those mods work.

yeah, they eventually want to rename it and have it be its own engine but atm, because of the volunteer nature of the work, it’s feature complete for unmodded Morrowind play (texture packs and model replacements aren’t hard, though), but that’s about it.

There is also the ability to play in multiplayer via tes3mp using an older version of openMW.

if it’s your first playthrough you should just use openMW.

while ye olde Morrowind has engine code patches and such, openMW fixes even more because it is its own engine. everything in the game works, as described, out of the box.

ye olde morrowind, the “unarmored” skill didn’t work without you having at least 1 piece of armor equipped, which is very unintuitive and an obvious oversight (code patch fixes that, but still).

if you don’t try to go jack of all trades it’s trivial to get your hit high enough to almost always hit.

there are leveling guides for those who want to play the game normally and specialize. the min/max guides are autistic and unfun.

also don’t bother with throwing weapons. you never get them back, you are literally throwing money away.

at least with bows, if you hit something, you might get the arrow from its corpse. you don’t get any arrows if you completely physically miss, though.

Defaults are fine. I don’t remember ever changing anything other than maxing out resolution.

Windows build works best. It's better than native morrowind on Windows 10. They have even fixed a ton of combat bugs the original engine still has.
