In the process of setting up my own Bitcoin Node. I read that one of the benefits to running your own is lower fees. How is that possible when you still need to buy through an exchange?

it was a requirement for computer science. i wasn't allowed to take C++ unless i passed calculus first. needless to say, i went into systems administration instead of engineering because of this stupid requirement.
