nostr clients always have this tension between:

✅ verifying signatures (bad performance)

🙃 "trust me bro" (no checking)

Next version of NDK is shipping with SO many performance tricks and improvements that I have zero chance of remembering what they were when I write the release notes.

But one of them is that.. fractions.

Developers will be able to configure a ratio of events to verify on a per-relay basis. For example, you could say "only verify 10% of events coming from each relay"

The cool part is that I can also compare signatures coming from different relays for the same event so evil relays can be detected even faster and kicked out.

I will make it possible later to save state of the "reputation" each client perceives of a relay, so that a client can start talking to a new relay with a higher ratio (e.g. 1.0 = "verify everything") and slowly transition to trusting the relay more (i.e. verify 1% of events).

This is the basic premise of auditing used in accounting and you can actually drop that number even lower to 1-2%

You might also add a list of “high priority” users based on follows or whatever where you verify all messages (the equivalent in auditing of testing everything over $10k or some similar amount)

It’s not quite that simple, because there have been hundreds of Bitcoin forks and not all of them have had the privilege of getting dumped like BCash

First, a fork would have to have enough momentum or interest in it for there to be a market made for it (listed on exchanges, able to find buyers, etc.)

If there isn’t infrastructure and at least some community, mining, and economic holder support, forks are irrelevant.

We are probably past the point of a successful hard fork being possible.

There are no forks of Bitcoin with a bigger market cap than Bitcoin, they have all been dumped like I am saying

A hard fork would need to be so convincing that more hodlers dumped the non-fork coins to buy more fork coins than vice versa

If Bitcoin forks, producing “Bitcoin A” and “Bitcoin B” chains, the victory of one chain or another will be determined by a small number of people confidently and immediately dumping one to buy more of the other. This will dump the price of one relative to the other, and the “wait and see” folks will get the hint and pile on.

The result is determined by the number of die-hard hodlers of one asset vs the other.

I measure meat space price in Bitcoin. Just like I measure concrete in Cubic Yards. So far it's deflationary. I don't measure Bitcoin in an arbitrary dollar that has no denominator.

It has to do with sums of infinite series.

In the first joke, the bartender thinks what’s coming is fractional powers of two. The sum of 1 +1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 + … = 1/2^0 + 1/2^1 + 1/2^2 + 1/2^3 + 1/2^4 + … = 2. That is, the sum of the series converges to 2. So he slams two beers to finish the sum rather than infinitely pouring smaller and smaller beers.

In the second joke, before the bartender can cut them off, the third mathematician reveals a different series: 1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + 1/5 + 1/6 + … = ∞. That is, the sum of the series diverges. So there’s no skipping to the end. The bartender has to just keep pouring smaller and smaller beers forever.
