It was reported in The NY Times that he was yelling that he was “ready to die” and to “go to prison for life”.
This is in a crowded subway car.

When I lived in New York I routinely saw crazy people on the subway cars. There were no shared societal norms over when to intervene to stop their erratic behavior from spilling over. They would threaten people in the subway. No one did anything.
Most people have careers and families and didn't want to risk losing it all for self-defense on the subway. Normal people fear violent encounters. People would run to another subway car or huddled into a corner if they got scared. Which I saw occasionally
It's not like you can get away this. This guy is now going to court and his life is going to be put on hold or changed completely soon.
I'm not surprised it's a 24 year old ex-marine doing this.
This type of self-defense wasn't going to be done by a Goldman Sachs banker or some lawyer in Manhattan. They do not want to engage in any sort of situation that can ruin them or their lives. The upper middle class doesn't fight.

Disagree. Removal of rock from the ecosystem contributes to the Permanent Now mindset
There was a continuity you engaged with and lore. You had to be a little historically literate.
I don't think that's been replaced by anything

it was a commerce empire as well. It was strictly trade.
Not a martial one. Rome was about war and conquering republics. Byzantium was about alliances.
but they went to war when they had to

Ancient Rome gets a lot of attention today but the East Roman Empire (Byzantium) faced much tougher opponents and still was the richest state of the middle ages.
Arabs, Slavs, Pechnegs, Bulgarians, Mongols, Persians
They were one of the only states to survive the Arab Invasions of the 7th century. They were waging a 150-year guerilla war in the early days of the Caliphate
Constantinople was constantly under siege for its entire existence.

George St. Pierre famously said he was always scared of the fighter on adderall than on steroids.
Steroids make you stronger
but adderall makes your reflexes quicker and lets you focus deeply.
you don't need a lot of power to knock someone out. you just need timing

I don't think giving it to a regular kid would make him into a star. But giving it to a young kid with lots of talent and training? I don't know the implications.
It does seem like enhancement at a young age could change every part of you.
