One day I'm going to make pants or shorts. I have a pattern made from an old pair that fit well but I think should make a test pair and then adjust if I need to and then try with the buckskin.
The hide is dry already. Smoking is the last step in braintanning and is a curing method. The smoke impregnates aldehydes in the leather which ensures it will never go back to a harden rawhide state. It adds colour but this will fade over time and washing.
