Brave Browser finally gets working vertical tabs

https://void.cat/d/Jxj9nfuiZ92nZTCMXuQe2K.webp

The early test versions had some real oddities with the resizing, but I see now mine show as minimised icons, and then hovering, just expands them which looks quite OK.

Live from v1.52 onwards by right-clicking on a tab and toggling the vertical tabs choice on the drop-down menu.

See https://brave.com/vertical-tabs/

There is the decentralised Lemmy network that provides Reddit functionality. It federates via ActivityPub protocol, and although many complain about some instances of it, the rules can differ for each hosted instance.

The complaints are not the fault of the technology, but more the moderation policy of each instance owner. Seems all are either too strict or too lenient ;-)

How to use Shizuku with Swift Backup to batch restore your Android apps after a factory reset (no root required)

https://www.androidpolice.com/how-to-use-shizuku-to-restore-your-android-apps/

Back in the early days of Android, Titanium Backup was considered the go-to backup solution for those with full root access. Its impact on the power user community over the years is undeniable. However, Titanium Backup's days are numbered because the original developer no longer updates the app.

Swift Backup is the perfect choice for all your backup needs, giving you offline and custom cloud storage options without requiring root access. It relies on the Shizuku service, which uses powerful on-device ADB commands and system APIs to elevate your Android experience. This allows you to have temporary higher-level system privileges without rooting your device, perfect for those who like to tinker with minimal risk. Using Swift Backup after a factory reset can save time, battery, and network data since you don't have to redownload your apps from the Google Play Store.

ADB backup APIs are deprecated by Google and most apps do not work with the ADB backup method any more.

One caveat though is that private app data, in /data/data/ or /data/user/*/ that stores your app preferences, login info, databases, etc, still requires root access, and can't be handled by Shizuku. However, the APK, app external data, and media can be backed up. So re-authentications may be required, but I suppose it does still save masses of time from not having to re-download each app.

Social mapping platform Atly launches with $18M to be a Reddit for real-world locations… But is there place in the market for more such apps?

https://techcrunch.com/2023/05/31/social-mapping-platform-atly-launches-with-18m-to-be-a-reddit-for-real-world-locations/

Founded out of Israel in 2019, Atly claims to be creating the “next social paradigm for mapping and discovering places to go.” It’s all about finding new restaurants, hiking trails, bike rental places, gluten-free eateries, record stores, rooftop bars, free public toilets, and all the rest.

Through the web or mobile app, users can create their own theme-specific community, after which they become the manager for that community, including setting rules for engagement and permissions around what other users can do in that community.

According to Maslansky, Atly is not generating any revenue itself yet, but some of its users are already earning by “gating their community” to paid members.

It's true that Google is rather slow nowadays in developing exciting new features (just look at far ahead Waze was on that front, so they got bought out), but there is also a lot to be said about "where most people are". That "where" is often the "why" which stops users migrating off to a new service, because their contacts are all in one place and there is a mass of useful information already available. So certainly, in this regard Google Maps has pretty good reviews, ratings, photos, and other info (as does Yelp). But possibly Atly will appeal to non-Google Map users still.

But what Atly is hoping will differentiate it, is a truly more social aspect, versus just a map with lots of reviews just posted to it. The Reddit concept has worked well, but it has no geolocation / mapping type organisation.

Here's an #introduction post... I'm here because I love technology, open source, open standards, alternative social networks, and trying out new things. These are all topics I blog about daily.

I've been hearing more and more about Nostr and suddenly today I realised I needed to get involved to really try understand it. I'm already on a good 14 or so social networks but I must say Nostr is ticking lots of my boxes.

It has also been quite easy to find people which is unusual for many privacy based and decentralised networks.

It's connectivity via relays is certainly working way better on mobile than the Secure Scuttlebutt apps did for me. So let's see how this goes...

I can't be your father then as I left Facebook a few years ago... But Facebook is where the older generation hang out 😂

Veloren is an open-source multi-player voxel role-playing game that can be self-hosted (and has more adventure and fun than Minecraft)

https://void.cat/d/NPk27QaRs1ix1iHTScMTDf.webp

It is inspired by games such as Cube World, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft.

You can play single player or multi-player, standalone or use an online server, or even host your own server in a Docker container, or on a Raspberry Pi. Plenty of options!

You start by creating your character, you can collect items for your inventory, you can craft items, there are weapons and combat, you develop skills, can tame creatures, you can trade with merchants, you can socialise, and lost more. There is no single, specific goal or focus, and the idea is to keep exploring and have adventures.

The game is community driven and actually updates quite regularly.

It is clearly no clone of Minecraft. It is fun and adventure!

Apache Guacamole: Open-Source Self-Hosted Remote Access Gateway To Access Various Computers With Just A Browser

To normally access say two Raspberry Pi's, maybe a remote virtual private server, a media machine in the sitting room, etc you'd probably use SSH from a terminal, as well as say a VNC Viewer, and maybe more applications. And you'd have to do that from the admin machine you've set it all up on.

With Apache Guacamole gateway setup, you'd just use your browser to log in to Apache Guacamole, and from there click on which machine you'd like to access remotely, whether by SSH, VNC, or RDP. The effort is done once to set up the configurations, but after that you can access via the gateway from any location, or even grant others access. So you are not tied to one admin machine that has all your remote access applications configured (big bonus if you are remote or travelling, as you just need a browser to access Apache Guacamole).
