Nutrient-rich topsoil is a crucial layer of the earth without which flora, fauna, and our entire agricultural ecosystem would not exist. Unfortunately, climate change is washing away this essential layer. India loses approximately 16 tonnes per hectare of topsoil annually. This is much greater than normal levels; in foothill regions, the loss increases by 25 times.

"We must understand how this affects the lives of citizens. Apart from the devastating impact on our environment, this has a huge effect on the livelihoods of the rural population. Lack of topsoil means that forests and arable lands will not be able to retain water, which further leads to flash floods, unpredictable droughts, and several other problems. The agricultural industry is the worst affected. Due to low ground-water reserves, irrigation becomes a challenge. And consistently degrading crop yields result in huge economic losses. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural Research estimates a loss of over 200 billion rupees annually due to topsoil erosion.

"However, solving such a complex and multifaceted issue requires multiple interventions. Both from the technological front and policy-wise..."

As an avid #Dystopian fiction reader (and writer), the scenarios closest to I thought what we might experience is (IMHO) the novel "Dies The Fire", as well as "The Hunger Games". "Dies The Fires" / #Emberverse has an interesting fictional scenario -- guns don't work, and nuclear radiation is lessened. But even that "ideal" scenario is wrought with death, disease, discord, dictators -- the usual stuff that happens when societies break down. DTF does offer a glimmer of hope, but with #ClimateChange, I think even that bit of hope has been dashed. So yeah. #HungerGames, #Elites pitting us against each other for entertainment. That seems way more likely.

On June 22, 2023, a UK judge dismissed the case against #SizewellC, threatening a fragile heritage site.

From the TASC website: "#SizewellC and all its supporting infrastructure will devastate untold acres of the wildlife-rich Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB and its SSSI, as well as irreparably damaging RSPB Minsmere. The area, a 30 mile radius around the site, will change from rural tranquillity to brutal #Industrialisation."

In Push to Find Methane Leaks, Satellites Gear Up for the Hunt

Stemming the methane leaks from #landfills, #oil fields, natural gas #pipelines and more is one of the most powerful levers we have to quickly slow global warming. New satellites are bolstering this urgent mission by pinpointing emitters of this potent greenhouse gas from space.

By Cheryl Katz • June 15, 2021

"Methane-hunting satellites have made a number of concerning discoveries. Among them: Despite the pandemic, methane emissions from oil and gas operations in #Russia rose 32 percent in 2020. Satellites also observed sizeable releases from gas pipelines in #Turkmenistan, a landfill in #Bangladesh, a natural gas field in #Canada, and coal mines in the U.S. #Appalachian Basin.

"The methane concentration in Earth’s atmosphere has been surging over the past half-decade, the NOAA Annual Greenhouse Gas Index shows. And despite the pandemic, 2020 saw the biggest one-year jump on record. The causes of the recent spike are unclear, but could include natural gas fracking, increased output from methane-producing microbes spurred by rising temperatures, or a combination of human-caused and natural forces."

Xcel Energy to temporarily shut down #Monticello nuclear plant after two radioactive water leaks; company says no threat to public

March 24, 2023

"On Wednesday, the plant's monitoring equipment detected hundreds of gallons worth of radioactive water since the crews made temporary repairs, and that it had reached #groundwater. Officials say the contaminated water, containing the radioactive isotope #tritium, has not yet reached the #MississippiRiver, which runs next to the plant.

"When the leak was first detected back in November, Xcel used a catchment and a pumping strategy to recovered the water containing tritium. They say they've recovered about 30% of that water so far. But over the past couple days, some of that radioactive water was spilling over the catchment, creating a new leak."

2018 -- Plenty of time for #Japan (and other countries) to have made PROGRESS setting up #tidal and #wave energy! But noooo... Much easier to turn old nuke plants back on and might has well just dump all the #nuclear waste directly into the #PacficOcean, rather than bother storing it, then dumping it. Yeah, can you tell I'm pissed off?! #NoNukes #RethinkNotRestart
