“If you’re only speaking to Republicans, you can have problems from the left as it comes to bitcoin due to them not understanding it or being hostile towards it. Whereas if you have a part of the progressive side that understands and appreciates bitcoin, that’s now like somewhat of a bipartisan defense for the network.”

TPB57 - What the Left Should Know About Money with nostr:npub1a2cww4kn9wqte4ry70vyfwqyqvpswksna27rtxd8vty6c74era8sdcw83a is out now. Lyn is a macroeconomist, author, and founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy.
Far from a niche libertarian curiosity, Lyn compellingly frames bitcoin as aligning with progressive values of financial inclusion, human rights, environmental sustainability and transparency. By tracing the evolution of monetary systems, she builds a thoughtful bipartisan case for why progressives should reconsider biases against this new form of "hard money."
In this conversation we discuss her new book Broken Money, which I think is one of the best books for low and working class people that exposes our current broken money and global financial system which benefits wealthy elite at the expense of every day people. We analyze global financial systems, the need for financial inclusion, Bitcoin's opt-out properties, and how Bitcoin transcends traditional partisan divisions. Lyn makes a compelling yet nonpartisan case for why those on the left concerned with human rights, the environment, and social equity should take a fresh look at Bitcoin's possibilities.
My hope is that this conversation will help folks from the left gain a better understanding of money, our global financial system, and yearn to learn more by reading Lyn's book and other resources about how we can actually help people the way our values and social programs desire to. We can't being to fix the world until we fix the money.

Interesting perspective from nostr:npub1a2cww4kn9wqte4ry70vyfwqyqvpswksna27rtxd8vty6c74era8sdcw83a regarding taxation in a “bitcoin world.” Progressives should consider that income tax the way it currently exists is not the only, and perhaps should not even be considered, in a more equitable and economically just world. Most wealthy citizens are able to avoid income taxes in many ways already. It’s time to consider the following:
“Income taxes within the current system rely on ubiquitous financial surveillance to be enforceable. If it becomes commonplace for people to send money peer-to-peer, including globally, and there are a large variety of privacy tools to make transactions hard to track, then it may become untenable for governments to tax incomes as their primary source of revenue. Taxes might have to revert more to how they were in the 19th century—when transactions were inherently more private—meaning that wealth taxes on real estate, excise taxes on select goods or ports of entry, sales taxes on physical establishments, income taxes on large and well-audited businesses, and fees for government services, would likely need to become the primary source of revenue. Administrative and tax overhead costs would likely be reduced, especially for individuals and business that don’t have a big physical footprint.”
- Broken Money, p.333
In this system, wealthy individuals and corporations would actually pay more of their fair share than our current system.

TPB56 - Bitcoin as a Progressive Force for Good with Bradley Rettler is live via our youtube channel and wherever you get your podcasts.
Bradley is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wyoming and a member of the research collective Resistance Money alongside Andrew Bailey and Craig Warmke. In this episode we discuss how Bitcoin connects to progressive values like privacy, freedom, economic justice and inclusion. We also discuss Bitcoin's potential for marginalized groups, protesting authoritarian regimes, campaign finance reform, reproductive rights, philosophy, critical thinking, renewable energy, and Bitcoin's independence from government control. Bradley is one of my favorite people to talk to about Bitcoin and how it can intersect with the real world and these things we as progressives really care about, and I couldn't be more excited for "Resistance Money" the book to be published in the coming months, which we will keep you all posted on.
