Try to book your accomodation and bus travels a few days in advance to circumvent the possibility of only having more expensive, shitty or no possibllility at all.
Flights, of course, few weeks in advance can cut costs or make sure you travel.

If you travel for longer, your budget matters a lot. Especially if you want to fit into a specific timeframe because of getting back to work or so.
We would suggest you to make a separate budget for each country. Check the accomodation prices, food prices, the entry and activity prices you want to go to or do, not to get surprised.
We heard Chile and Argentina is expensive, but darn, we did not expect this. So we needed to cut budget.

That is a good question! Unfortunately no first hand experience. We are "summering" through.
But we also heard that Bariloche is a well-liked ski resort on the Southern Hemisphere. We also heard that many Brazilians went there skiing, but since Argentina become really expensive, they can't afford it anymore.
Sorry, tour agencies
So you need to know the prices if you want to budget it.
It is quite interesting, that you would think, that splitting transportation costs between many people is cheaper. But sometimes, a rented car is cheaper.
Yes, travel agencies.
It depends on what you need, and what is necessary. If you want to do an ice climbing on Villarrica in Pucón, Chile, transportation might not be enough.
If you want to visit the national park on Rapa Nui Island, you need a guide for many attractions. Similar on Galapagos Island.
Sometimes only a transportation is more economical. Sometimes renting a car. Sometimes a guided tour.
Also they depend on how many you are? 1 person, 2 people, more?
Hit us up if you have any questions about travelling South America, we might be able to give you some tips or hints.

If you plan to visit Argentina, do yourself a favor, and check the prices of the things you want to do or visit. Ask around in local agencies via WhatsApp too.
Almost everyone uses WhatsApp there.
Argentina is pretty expensive these days, e.g. 45 usd for a day ticket to a national park. Though you can get a discount if you buy it for 3 days.

If you want to save money, talk to agencies in a city you go to beforehand, then go in physically to their office to get a better price.
Also in many cases you can get a cash discount.

If you use skyscanner for finding cheap flights, consider that it shows ticket prices without luggage.
In many booking sites, you will have a cheap ticket without checked baggage. But with the checked baggage, it is more expensive than booking directly at the airline. 90% of the time, this is the case.
And yes, checking the prices on each site by adding luggage to compare prices takes time. That is why we wrote the previous post.
And in rare cases, you will find cheaper tickets with luggage in other sellers (resellers) than the airline itself. So it worth it to check.

Weird. I tried, and I could just zap myself, lol. What wallet have you tried from?
We started a 6 month trip, only booked the first week. Then we had to spend a lot of time deciding what to do in cities, how much time to spend there, book accomodations, buses, airplanes, etc.
To make it efficient, you need to be aware what places you want to visit in a town, and what activities you want to do, how much time they take and how to get there. You might ask locals, and reschedule. But if, as in our case, you are bound to 6 month, you have to skip something in order to add something new.
To make it budget, e.g.: you have to book plane tickets in advance, or track prices, and buy at the right time. Book tours in local agencies, because tours booked online tend to be more expensive.
But to be able to flexible to add local tips for new destinations, you must not be fully booked, or have more expensive flex tickets. But then screw money saving...
Could be a burden, I tell you, but man, how many amazing things you will be able to visit or do like this is pretty worth it!

Now? I received a zap though, but without a notification.
It says geotagging and location options is independent, so that still stays in the image. Interesting.
