Costa Rica Has No Army. Since Dec. 1, 1948, we are demilitarized. The nation remains democratic to this day and economic growth has been impressive without a standing military to invest in.

We, "Ticos" are extremely proud of this. Costa Ricans put effort into differentiating themselves from many of their more troubled and violent neighbors as well as their social, political, cultural, and environmental progressive policies.
