“Twenty years away…”

That’s what I’ve heard about commercial fusion power since I was a teenager in the 1980s. Now we have the announcement from the National Ignition Facility that for the first time researchers have generated more power from fusion than that required to start the reaction.

Are we REALLY only twenty years away this time? And what science fiction stories might the possibility of fusion power inspire in the 21st century?
