06/21/2013 - Drug Enforcement Agency seized 11.02 bitcoins from a South Carolina man attempting to buy illegal substances with the magic internet money. This was the first known seizure of Bitcoin by the U.S. government, signaling that the feds started taking Bitcoin seriously.

Executive Order 6102 was signed by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt "forbidding the hoarding of gold within the continental United States."
Interestingly, April 5th was the date Satoshi chose as his birthday when he registered with the P2P Foundation. Satoshi chose 1975 as his year of birth as this was the year when the order was reversed and US citizens were allowed to hold gold again.
