Soldiers from the 72nd Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces told the BBC about the chaotic retreat from Ugledar.

The soldiers reported that their units left Ugledar without waiting for the order to retreat.

One of the two interlocutors, a machine gunner, said that in the last few days, Ukrainian fighters had to leave Ugledar on foot.

According to the second interlocutor, Roman, while trying to leave the ruins of the city, many were killed or wounded by Russian drones and artillery, and many are considered missing.

In the last days of September, the Russians were able to approach from the west almost right up to the only remaining road connecting Ugledar with the rear, with the village of Bogoyavlenka, and the garrison found itself half-encircled: the Russians used drones and artillery to shoot at everything that moved along this road.

" They tried to bring them in, sent evacuation crews to take out the 200s and 300s, but to no avail. They lost several cars, and decided to stop there ," Roman said.

When the Russians entered the city, Ukrainian units began to retreat without waiting for orders.

" When a retreat is not organized, chaos begins, this is a natural rule of war ," the machine gunner said.

Some groups were disoriented because they lost radio contact, he said, and had to make quick decisions on their own, often to retreat.

Roman explained that their fortified positions had been destroyed by Russian bombs, shells and missiles, and in this situation, retreating from the positions was inevitable.

" How can you fight when you are the only one left in your position and everything is flying at you? Either die or retreat ," Roman explained.

But, according to him, it was also extremely dangerous to get out of the almost surrounded city: during the day, such attempts were equivalent to a suicide mission.

Mostly, Ukrainian soldiers tried to leave at night, and through minefields, following marked tracks, so as not to go along the road to Bogoyavlenka, which was under fire.

" Until recently, evacuation vehicles could enter under cover of darkness with their headlights off. But as soon as Russian troops reached the city center, the only way to escape was on foot ," Roman said.

The military criticizes the command for not giving the order to withdraw from the city for a long time, even when it was effectively surrounded and it was clear that it was impossible to hold it.

" I don't know what it was: the commanders' fear of the high command or an order from the high command itself to drag it out to the last on the blood of ordinary boys. It's incomprehensible to all of us ," the machine gunner admitted.
