A person who can't find something to laugh about in these situations shouldn't be homesteading 😁

Well, #homesteading friends, the piglets are BACK. Last night began the torrential rain and thunderstorms, and perhaps that was enough to send this little piggy wee wee wee alllll the way home. Got a call earlier in the morning that she was sighted even further from our property, heading to the beach. This from a fisherman, who I am certain has never seen a pig near the shore. Anyhow, this afternoon my son was sent home from the farm he works at due to the weather and as he got out of the car he spotted the second piglet just outside the pen fence 😱 We were all on instant alert and drenched in seconds, and could hardly hear one another over the weather, but managed to get the piglet stuck between the wire of the pig pen and the dog run fence. As we're trying to problem solve that, one of our farmer friends shows up to check on the fence work! That little piggy gave a squeal and bolted like you wouldn't believe but my 21 yo daughter--still in her nice work clothes from the morning-- tackled it and kept it pinned to the dirt (now mud) floor while the rest of us tried to block any exit. The farmer reached under to grab it by the hind legs. Then PLOP over the fence she (gently) went to find her friend and now we have TWO.

So the lessons here are: God hears prayers. Whatever good you think your fence is, double it. Good neighbors are a treasure (so be one). And sometimes when all seems lost, it's actually the storm that brings home what's missing. Be ready.

In which I forgo folding laundry to bake an orange-strawberry breakfast cake instead, because I'm still sad about my lost piglet and folded laundry doesn't make me feel any better. The live trap comes today. Here's hoping.

On losing my piggies... πŸ₯Ί

Well, we've spotted the lone piggy a few times now and my son even caught its hoof once before getting cut up as it escaped. We've found a live trap finally so hopefully that will be the way. I can tell you this though: I won't feel guilty eating any of it later.

Our internet has been out the last two days as well. Cell is spotty as usual. Glad I still have a landline and my HAM (<--the one that won't escape).

Well we almost caught piggy number two yesterday...but nope! Now I'm looking for a live trap but seems like I'm going to just have to buy one and hope for the best. We went to the county fair yesterday and my kids now want to raise every animal they saw there. I reminded them we first have to learn to keep the ones we already have home!

Began our day with yummy orange melons from the farm. Then had the happy catch of one of our piglets (YAY). Still have one more out in the woods and probably extra unhappy without her buddy, but we left food and water for her and will head out again. I'm hearing about a cougar in the area so it's still pretty stressful. The land she is on has a wonderful owner who is giving us help via access and his game camera. I hope he likes pork bc if I can keep and raise them, he's getting some! Also it's been nice how kind people have been, not getting a lot of goobers shaking their fingers at me. Hope the other one is home soon.

No piggies in sight yet. Still so sad. Tomorrow OVERbuilding out the pen, but I dunno how long I'll wait until they come back or are found or (or...so many questions...). I'm still just sick to my stomach that it happened. But I did manage to eat a couple of figs today, finally ripe on the tree.

These are what my two lost piggies look that. I spent all day in the woods yesterday and I'm exhausted. I didn't even get the pleasure of finding any mushrooms. I found them at least three times but they wanted nothing to do with the food in my bucket and would spook off. At this point I am hoping they'll find their way home and not become cougar bait. It feels pretty hopeless, honestly.

Lost my piggies not once but twice.

1. They were here for what felt like 15 minutes. They got under the wire and then panicked and shoved themselves under the outer fence into the woods. Thankfully caught and brought back.

2. Moved into dog run for the night so we could bolster up the other yard. Fine this morning but heard squealing and what do you know one burrowed and got out.

3. Got her cornered with a neighbor but then the other decided to join in and they shot off. Then had a scare about the neighbor's kid wandering off (she's ok but if you're a mom, you know).

4. Last seen within the dozens of acres of forest and bramble. Been looking for hours. Snacking on cheese and blackberries and honestly I'm feeling really dejected. Two pig farmers helped me set all this up and problem solve and yet my pigs are now lost in the woods. Neighbors aren't home to help. I feel a little lost and really sad for those piglets.

In which I grab my son's bike to go for a ride but have to stop to take a photo for social media which has absolutely nothing to do with my stamina (pant pant).

I finally got some coffee. But I've had a day and so topped it with fresh whipped cream. And then sprinkles (colored with turmeric and spirulina because I try to avoid artificial anything, even people). I'm catching up on computer work today but in a couple of hours I'm off to pick up my pigs! Oh and check out the wire a neighbor flat out gave me. We're still the new neighbors in this part of the woods but I think they like us 😊 I hope I can be as generous someday (maybe with some pork!)
