Established in 1859 as a provisional church by French cleric Mermet De Cachon from the Paris Foreign Missions Society, this marks the inception of such endeavors in Japan. This occurred despite the government's persistent ban on Christianity, which would last for over a decade. This church holds historical significance comparable to the Yamate Church in Yokohama and the Oura Church in Nagasaki.
In 1868, Priests Mounicou and Ambruster erected a makeshift church at the current location. By 1877, the first wooden church was constructed under the guidance of Priest Marin, although it succumbed to fire on three occasions.
The current fire-resistant Gothic-style building dates back to 1924. Pope Benedict XV gifted the Tyrolean wooden carvings that depict the fourteen Stations of the Cross and comprise the altar.

The Japanese government, through the Treaty of Shimoda in 1855, pledged to supply land and housing for the Russian Consulate. By the 1858 treaty, Russia's diplomatic representatives were granted the right to permanent residency in Japan, leading to the establishment of the first Russian Empire Consulate in Hakodate.
In late 1858, the inaugural mission of the Russian Consulate, headed by Iosif Antonovich Goshkevich, arrived in Hakodate, Japan. Initially, the Russian mission was accommodated in local Buddhist temples. Goshkevich, serving as the Consul, promptly initiated discussions with Japanese authorities to secure a land allocation for the mission. Ultimately, an agreement was reached to assign land in the coastal area at the base of Mt. Hakodate, which remains the current location.

In #Hakodate, there is the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Hall. Sakamoto Ryoma was a Japanese samurai, a shishi and influential figure of the Bakumatsu, and establishment of the Empire of Japan in the late Edo period.
I was confused, Sakamoto Ryoma was born in #Shikoku and died in #Kyoto, what does it have to do with #Hokkaido? I looked up @Wikipedia and couldn't find the answer, so I paid 800 yen 💴 to go to the memorial hall to find out.
Sakamoto Ryoma's involvement in Hokkaido colonization began in 1864, but he withdrew from the plan due to the impact of the Ikedaya Incident. After establishing Kaientai, he procured the ship "Wild Wave" for the journey, which tragically sank, taking 12 lives. His subsequent attempts with "Iroha-maru" and "Daigyokumaru" also failed due to unfortunate accidents and payment issues. This series of setbacks ended with Ryoma's assassination, leaving his dream of Hokkaido colonization unfulfilled. Despite these hardships, he retained his passion for Hokkaido's development till his last moments, as revealed in his letters.

It’s a Japanese #curry 🍛 #restaurant 🍴, and the owner warmly greeted me. The spice level here can be adjusted from not spicy to spicy enough to separate the brain from the body. I chose a spicy level of 2 degrees, which was just right. The vegetable curry includes shredded burdock and is served with white rice (probably mixed with turmeric), which is very tasty!

The first time I stepped into a Japanese shrine ⛩️ was at the Hokkaido Shrine in #Sapporo, and it was during their festival, and there were many people there. There was a traditional performance like a divine drama in the shrine, and despite the drizzling rain, the audience did not leave the stage.

Sightseeing along the route from #Sapporo to #Hakodate

The platform of #Sapporo Station has a dark and old style.

And this is a night view 🌃 of #Hakodate after sunset.

The view of #Hakodate from the mountain in the evening

This #Italian-style #restaurant in #Hakodate has a very nice atmosphere and the owner is very welcoming. The margherita here has a lot of cheese, and the crust is slightly burnt, and you can smell the faint crispy scent. The aroma of the #basil and the sweetness of the #tomatoes create the most perfect flavor of the #pizza.

Today I'm leaving #Sapporo for #Hakodate!
#札幌市電 (市區內的電車🚃)也太有近代史的感覺了吧😍
Today I ate a limited period #vegetarian #burger in Mos Burger.

I like to eat Mos Burger in #Taiwan, but yesterday I finally had the "original" Mos Burger in #Japan 🇯🇵 for the first time.
In Taiwan, #vegetarians only have one or two burgers to choose from, but have four different kinds in Japan😍. I'm going to try each of them once😋

The style of Sapporo Station reminds me of #Manchukuo and #Russia 🇷🇺.

I tried a Japanese vegan restaurant, Holistic Bio Cafe Veggy Way, in #Sapporo at noon today. And that is the second time I have tasted #vegan #ramen in #Japan. The taste differed slightly from #Tokyo, but it was still delicious. It seemed that the plant meat🍃🥩 was made from mushrooms, and it seemed to be marinated with lemon juice first, which made it taste very refreshing.
The soy milk ice cream🍦 was also exceptional as it seemed slightly fermented initially, giving it a flavor similar to yogurt. When the ice cream melts in your mouth and you swallow it, you can feel the taste of soy milk.
