The current unfunded liabilities number is $159 trillion. Unfunded liabilities are the future obligations of the US government. The government has promised to pay these bills but they have not yet been billed (or funded.) The big share of these future obligations are Medicare and Social Security. (Both of which are hard debts that will grow at least as fast as the CPI, meaning they cannot be inflated away.) The governments promise is now impossible to keep. It's breaking now.
