Today 2 Nov is “International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists” (ジャーナリストへの犯罪不処罰をなくす国際デー) and though the name’s unwieldy, this is a critical concept for awareness and action. 📰

I could see this bike parking lot from the lot where I parked my scooter, before COVID. 📷🚲

1st Nov 1890 (M23) is “tenji day” (ten is dot, ji is character), marking the day braille in Japan switched from romanized Japanese to a direct kana representation. 🦮🇯🇵

I loved this persimmons tree we used to have for its beautiful waxy fruit. Evokes a strong feeling of autumn every time I see them. 📷🍂🍁

Besides Halloween, today is World Thrift Day (勤倹の日), started in 1924 in Milan by bankers, to try to get people to be frugal and save more. Whatever the motive, we can all reduce waste. ♻️

Added an annotated map for hiking Daibosatsurei in Yamanashi, to my Japan hiking maps page. 🥾🇯🇵

An oddly shaped building in Totsuka Yokohama. I wonder if the top floor interior ceiling is also round. 📷

Maru the Shiba says Happy Halloween, but isn’t so happy about it. 😂🎃🐕

I observed these workers laying rock fall prevention fencing on a cliff, in Totsuka Yokohama, 2008. A few rapelled and fitted while others brought the fence in. 📷👷‍♂️

The look on Maru the Shiba’s face when he realized he wasn’t going hiking with us yesterday. 🥹 Some TLC is needed!

The construction site of the Totsukana mall, from JR Totsuka in 2008, after the old Totsuka West shopping streets were razed. SEIYU was not yet Saclass, and you can still see part of its red sign. 📷🚧

Got back safe from Daibosatsurei. Pretty tired, it was a 3 hour drive each way and a 6 hour hike, and it was super crowded. Oh, and it hailed suddenly. 🥶📷🥾

If you sleep 6 hours you have 1080 minutes to use in a day. If you use social media for just ten minutes, that’s already ~1% of your day gone. 🧐

Stress relief for adults comes in many forms I suppose. 📷🛝

Tomorrow I’m hiking 大菩薩嶺 Mount Daibosatsu with K, and while it looks like the weather will hold, summit temp is supposed to be about 8℃ so we’ll layer. It’s a 2,057m peak in Yamanashi pref; one of the “100 famous mountains” of Japan. 🇯🇵🥾

Just call me Janssen. Backed this iMicro Q3 fingertip microscope on kickstarter; it attaches to your smart phone and lets you do microphotography. It is supposed to launch in the spring so I’ll be looking forward to it. 🦠🔬

Always liked seeing the Totsuka 和紙 “washi” shop, for Japanese paper, on my commute. This photo is from 2009, so I wonder if this place is still there, behind Saclass. 📷📜
