Robert Reich: Record Corporate Profits From Your Thinning Wallets – OpEd

==========

Corporate profits reached a record high in the fourth quarter of last year. Inflation is still present, with prices rising 0.3 percent month-to-month in February. The easiest explanation for both phenomena is that corporations have enough monopoly power to keep prices high. The American public is not crediting Biden with a great economy because of this. Antitrust laws must be enforced and big corporations must not be allowed to use their power to gouge consumers. The Biden administration has taken action against alleged price fixing in the meat industry, sued Amazon and Apple for anti-monopoly practices, and blocked the merger of JetBlue and Spirit Airlines. Senator Elizabeth Warren has introduced the Price Gouging Prevention Act to stop companies from charging "grossly excessive" prices. The record profits of large corporations are coming out of the paychecks of average Americans. Biden and the Democrats must address this issue and take action to stop corporate monopolies and price gouging.

Trump’s Tariff Talk Proves Bad Economics Can Be Good Politics – OpEd

==========

Former President Donald Trump's trade policies were bad for the economy but good for his political prospects. His anti-trade rhetoric and imposition of tariffs on Chinese imports resulted in higher prices for U.S. consumers and decreased average incomes in both the U.S. and China. However, his trade policies did not protect U.S. manufacturing jobs as promised, and China's retaliatory tariffs decreased agricultural employment in the U.S. Despite the lack of economic benefits, voters in districts with firms targeted for protection by Trump's tariffs were more likely to vote for him and Republicans. The political appeal of Trump's rhetoric can be attributed to voters' difficulty in understanding the effects of economic policies. Without a solid understanding of economics, voters may confuse correlation and causation. Trump's trade policies highlight the disconnect between good politics and good economics.

‘Dialogue The Way Forward On Ukraine War’: PM Modi – OpEd

==========

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 20, 2024, and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. During the conversation with Putin, Modi reiterated "Dialogue and Diplomacy as the way forward" in Russia-Ukraine conflict. Presidents of Russia and Ukraine have both invited Prime Minister Modi to their respective nations upon the conclusion of the General Election. The PM’s call comes at a time when the conflict in Ukraine seems poised to take a dangerous turn, after France said it would send soldiers to fight against the Russian forces. In his conversation with Zelenskyy, PM Modi discussed the strengthening of the India-Ukraine partnership and conveyed India’s consistent support for all efforts for peace to bring an early end to the ongoing conflict. PM Modi also congratulated Putin on his re-election as President of Russia and discussed ways to further strengthen the `India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’. India and China are potential mediators in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but China may face opposition from the US. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba is expected to visit India and invite PM Modi to attend the 'Peace Summit' being organized in Switzerland next month. India has been constantly calling on both Russia and Ukraine to end the war and choose dialogue and diplomacy. Prime Minister Modi is one of the most influential leaders of the world and has a special partnership with Russia, Ukraine, Israel, and Palestine. India can play the role of a mediator between Russia and Ukraine as it is respected by both nations and their Presidents.

Is The US Distracted From East Asia? – OpEd

==========

The article discusses the United States' involvement in international crises, particularly in Ukraine and the Middle East. It highlights President Joe Biden's interventionist policy and his pledge to defend Taiwan from China. The article argues that the United States' role as the world's policeman since World War II is unsustainable and unnecessary, given its declining share of global GDP. It suggests that the United States should focus its attention and resources on East Asia, where the combined GDP of the region has risen to 26 percent of the world's total. The rise of China and its actions towards Taiwan and the South China Sea are seen as potential threats that require the United States' attention, but not to the point of excessive alarm or hysteria.

Sperm Whales Have Culture Too: Strong Evidence That Clans, Culture, And Dialects Are Not Unique To Humans – OpEd

==========

Sperm whales have complex social structures and communication methods, similar to human societies. They live in family units called clans, which have distinct dialects and travel patterns. The clans differ in their communication patterns and diving behaviors. The discovery of different clans has been made in various regions, including the Galápagos Islands, Chile, Japan, Mauritius, Brazil, and the Caribbean. The clans have an average of about 20,000 members and can recognize each other through their dialects. The parallels between sperm whale clans and human societies suggest common environmental drivers for large-scale social structures. The author emphasizes the need to protect sperm whales, as their population is heavily reduced and facing new threats.

The Black Cloud In Jobs Growth’s Silver Lining – OpEd

==========

The article discusses the recent jobs growth in the US economy, which defied economists' expectations. The employment numbers showed a gain of 353,000 jobs economywide, keeping the unemployment rate steady at 3.7%. However, there are concerns that the rise in wages may be due to a drop in hours worked caused by bad winter weather. The article also highlights that the majority of jobs growth is in the healthcare and government sectors, with government employment persisting over the long run. The author argues that an increase in government employment is not something to celebrate as it can be a drag on economic growth and prosperity.
