What I was thinking was with the emphasis on Competence. If I do something, like you mention, without the skills, I'm not competent.

If I do something based on the lie that I can do something I've never done, it won't come across as competence.

So, when someone is competent, you can see the truth in their actions, (as you say) the fitness, adequacy, suitability, skilledness.

If that makes any sense?
