so that might be a problem currently because you would be relying on those 40 for moderation, now if you only read your feed then its not an issue as those 40 would only be in it
i have discussed and it will come we need multiple feeds or ranking follows etc, so you might follow 500 people and uprank the 40 you want to read only into another feed, while having good antispam if you browse the global feed from the 500
nostr works currently with social circles, all moderation is based on your social circle
no muting works very well, you can just mute the thread, the way moderation works on nostr is basically everyone gets to experience the platform like it had jannies you controlled, that did what you wanted
so communities are being deved, but until then you build a follow list, you can just copy one to start, i was just discussing we need tools to trade and develop lists and well some of that has already been worked on
i use nostr regularly and have NO issues with spam, amethyst app on android filters all the spam, you just need a good amount of follows which you can copy with one tap
you can still access the fedi from nostr, and not follow, mute or report bitcoin spam

the bots are quite funny because i still see the reply number but no reply
the way nostr does moderation is close to as good as can be done, other platforms are quite dumb at it
so to handle the crypto spam you need a decent follow list and an app like amethyst which filters it out for your follows reports
you can copy follow lists off another user, just find any interesting person with a few 100 follows, iris.to and some other apps can copy all follows
