nostr:npub1s987jelcay8laanrx4j67fa3srwwkuxc9uew84ahww2aum09rpes96ewp9 I agree, really lovely area :-) The cycle paths here are also in way better condition than in my city so that helped as well 😅

nostr:npub1qpq5nhacs78fusay2fl3njpwegu37s9q8suty9zpr7qfqad5xl0s4pn9er You‘re right! They have such horrendous calls though.
Quick (13 km) lunch break cycle tour. Today‘s destination was the Wasserschloss Tatenhausen in Halle (Westf.), Germany.
Lots of lovely birds around as well! Heard a Green Woodpecker, saw half a a dozen or so Spotted Flycatchers, Common Buzzards, a Kestrel and a few others.

A European Greenfinch looking at me very angrily. He clearly didn't want his photo taken!

nostr:npub1wzt2epgy2lhykv528lew6dzp777ssun6xx979uf30zlhvw45qg9qsjn2xs Yeah, they're about the same size as ours then.
Tiny is relative, I guess. I expected something much bigger (something the size of a coot) and was very surprised to see that it was much smaller than that.

nostr:npub1s987jelcay8laanrx4j67fa3srwwkuxc9uew84ahww2aum09rpes96ewp9 A museum? English and its curious names for large groups of birds. I thought murder and conspiracy were strange enough (crows and ravens) but „museum“??
nostr:npub1wzt2epgy2lhykv528lew6dzp777ssun6xx979uf30zlhvw45qg9qsjn2xs Are they also tiny? I had envisioned their being roughly the size of a Common Moorhen but was quite surprised to find out that they’re roughly the size of a wagtail!
A video I took of the Common Sandpiper today. I love how it wags with its tail and bobs its head! So adorable.

nostr:npub18jgl5fy9ahj6hs0anu5u9g4llhsetlg66pdaseezvtkunqkt7ges8hmm9c Even when sped up, the herons barely move.
nostr:npub19gg0dffcsnfsga6khq3zep4kghl8dcuv5mp52ypkrr0cy3ufmqxs39utl6 Isn't it so disappointing when you get a new bird and it's called a "common" whatever.
nostr:npub18zzpc58524648mzye8jslg6v4wp2gxevzhuqja2axntw35ydtvcqtruha8 In German, they're called “Riverbank Runner" (Flussuferläufer). I much prefer that over “Common Sandpiper”.
But I do agree. But he's not all that common where I live!
nostr:npub19gg0dffcsnfsga6khq3zep4kghl8dcuv5mp52ypkrr0cy3ufmqxs39utl6 What is that behind him?
It can't be a snake. Is it a discarded bicycle tyre?
nostr:npub197yhk8lcnh93knysghvts9facufcvuaej4zcqgpu4whnt62ypcrqsjgdx0 It is indeed a discarded bicycle tyre. This is an artificial lake that's been drained to turn it into a rainwater retention basin with a small stream flowing through it.
When they drained the lake, all the trash that people have thrown into it over the years emerged. There also some shopping carts in there.
My very first — and also heavily-cropped — photograph of a Common Sandpiper (Flussuferläufer). I saw him for the first time yesterday but wasn't able to take a photo due to the rain. So I decided to go back today and look for him again — and there he was!
They're so difficult to spot. Unless they move, it's basically impossible to see them.

nostr:npub124ggyptgtgr3ws5w2fhhstzemaj9w4sjjj8p8xm8srf772d8crzsalzagy I know, right? They're adorable :-)
nostr:npub10tqd6xdex04tfm8rnx2pahluglwq3dymd22tx2gm38eysr5qqnlsn5xuax Unfortunately, it seems to help with engagement and viewership. But I do agree that it's rather annoying. I have frequently watched a video twice because the thumbnail and title was completely different.
A very contemplative Common Blackbird on top of a roof. Unfortunately, you don't really hear their beautiful song much anymore. Sometimes one of them sings, but it's much less common than in early summer or even spring.

New lifer! We (me and nostr:npub1fneh3ggk7ah4axzxd9vpjmx8e2enkjfzs984stvpp6m33vzr9dxs9zdm0k) were walking my dog during this very rainy Saturday evening and, as always, stopped by one of the artificial lakes (Stauteich) next to the apartment to see if we can spot the Common Sandpiper that had been seen here before.
Well, I say "lake". This "lake” isn't really a lake anymore as it has been turned into a rainwater retention basin. But as the past few days have been very rainy, it's started resembling a small lake once more.
At any rate, we ended up seeing what we thought were three Sandpipers on what has now turned into a small island of mud and stones further back. Of course I forgot my binoculars at home, so I quickly ran home, grabbed my binoculars, ran back and looked at the spot where we saw one of them land.
And indeed, it was a Common Sandpiper! I hadn't ever seen one before and was shocked at its small size. I expected them to be the size of a moorhen but it looked to be just a tiny bit larger than a wagtail.
Very fun to have seen a new lifer today :-) Maybe next time I can get a photo of it too!
