It's not actually about promoting the market, rather

"neoliberalism uses concepts from economics to promote the interests of capital (corporations and companies)."

I could sell my Stockholm apartment tomorrow and buy a really big farm house in inland Sweden. That's not a proof of concept of me moving into a big house, though, because having an income is a critical factor of me having a life, just like having moderation is a critical factor of having a social network.

Trying to artificially separate off technical developments from their critically dependent social aspects is part of how we got into this mess.

No question about about moderation from me here. Just stating that new fediverse tech that can scale better is probably a net good, in part because moderation is mostly a separate (though important) issue.

Either this technology implies a vast unmoderated space, or it implies a vast commercial enterprise to pay for moderation. In both cases these are social questions as much as they are technical ones.

There's a glib saying that "politics is the shadow cast by big business", but this underestimates our power.

Politics is the shadow cast by the *balance of forces in a society*. Good things happen by people pushing the balance more in the direction of freedom and equality.

And this breach in historical memory was also caused by the Marxist-Leninist left, both in government and as parties in the west.

Those who want to lay claim to a monopoly on the term 'socialism' are not eager for you to know about all the diversity of radical social democracy, council communism and syndicalism that was usually bigger than Leninism in Europe until the 1930s saw them killed off.

On the one end you have journalists who act in a scientific way and change their angle depending on what happens during data collection. On the other end you have the journalists who don't even bother contacting many experts because they have their short list of (usually white men) who will give guaranteed good quotes no matter the issue.

Politicians always look for a negotiated compromise, a face saving deal that allows both sides to tell their supporters they won, a tweaked budget that sounds plausible until the next one. They are totally unable to deal with hard facts.

Climate science is a scientific field. Human behaviour and politics are other fields. Possibly undervalued.
