nostr:npub17a5s9qjwz97a855gkg6fn2asjxtxnp2q4lxnzg5g33uxrxggg4ls8jcjkx Yes, but I think Mona Charen's point is that, in aggregate, courts have been exceptionally unwilling to tolerate this b.s. and bend the law to accommodate it in the Trump era.
nostr:npub1hqjt378t4hcf2pu5lt8pjtmaazpm5e97mtqefncvryu9ym6zvvzqjajea3 And I'm ashamed that my uncle once chaired the speech and drama department there!
nostr:npub1lgmezr02rtw7hq70amz5y6uw0mdaxhulw3r882j8g7c5wur3750sm9npu0 And in Biden's case, where's the evidence the Republicans claim to have but never produce?
nostr:npub1zudl6400ndlx2t77gtg3ecpwz5xdews3suuvga7p02ty42r6r0tqmm7j5y I agree. And it keeps going on and on, with Democratic administrations granting these dispensations to colleges and universities and refusing to fight — because they know the Supreme Court has its thumb on the scales in favor of religious freedom-as-right to discriminate.
nostr:npub1lzz05275zkk6zwuzel45jusr74ftyyuah8zll8vl09k98w8smy7qedjhl3 I don't think anyone really understands how to do "balanced" reporting when there is a narcissist in the story, but I agree that the press is far too cautious to maintain the appearance of balance rather than the actuality of fairness.
nostr:npub1gv8e4r4vccsp89jfc7w782h85hf768kncprzaxlsddd4ldp6jlzsdc28kw I think the problem goes beyond the narcissism of any individual, and has a lot more to do with the press's continuing penchant for bending over backwards to accommodate Republicans and hold Democrats to different standards — with the owners and top managers of most media empires being Republican.
"Baylor University recently asked for and was granted a federal religious exemption from charges of sexual harassment against LGBTQ students under Title IX — something it has not sought since 1976."
~ Emily Cousins
Like quite a few other church-affiliated colleges/universities in the US, Baptist-founded and -affiliated Baylor wants to suck up federal money while violating federal non-discrimination laws re: LGBTQ people.

I'm sorry that David Brooks is just now noticing that Americans can be mean. I really am.
I suspect, though, that if he'd asked, oh, say, people of color, LGBTQ ones, immigrants, native Americans, etc., he'd have found long since that the American mean streak is nothing new. It just feels entitled to show itself without apology right now.
Straight white men surely do seem to need a not of educating. From those they've long ignored….

"The tactics of lying, whataboutism, distraction, and insults may succeed on NewsMax or in the pages of the Federalist. They don’t work as well in front of a judge. …
Courts are not perfect truth detectors, but they are a helluva lot better at separating fact from fiction than talk radio, social media, or cable TV. Just ask E. Jean Carroll or the plaintiffs in the Trump University case."

"The New York Times has never apologized for its Clinton email coverage. Maybe it will someday. Maybe the political media writ large will eventually learn the lesson of 2016, and stop getting played by a bad-faith Republican scandal machine. Or maybe that will be the lesson of 2024. Again."

"Jonathan Swan, Ruth Igielnik, Shane Goldmacher and Maggie Haberman just reported for the New York Times not about how Trump’s indictments make his candidacy a grotesque farce, but about the 'upside-down reality' shared by many Republican voters, 'where criminal charges act as political assets.'
The incomparability between the Trump and Biden 'scandals' is almost too obvious to mention, but not mentioning it in a story about the Hunter Biden case is journalistically criminal."

"No evidence has been unearthed to suggest that President Biden abetted or profited from Hunter’s frauds, beyond simply continuing to stand by him — as a good father is wont to do.
So unless that changes, it’s not really a legitimate campaign story. It’s a curiosity. Worse than that, it’s a distraction from the real stories."

"Can’t stop. won’t stop. That didn’t take long.
After U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan made explicit Friday that she will do whatever is necessary to protect the integrity of the proceedings in the Jan. 6 case of U.S. v. Trump, the former president resumed his public attacks on her and her proceedings."

nostr:npub1p0ycaundq55puyhhtqrpxgfrrqw8nfxzpuvxw68ffu95amfsxakq6yrz7w Yes, the keep right on using this tactic and getting away with it, in part, because the media roll over and comply, creating ludicrous both-sides narratives when one side is clearly bunkum.
nostr:npub1p0ycaundq55puyhhtqrpxgfrrqw8nfxzpuvxw68ffu95amfsxakq6yrz7w Fascinating information. It's a reminder, isn't it, that what we no longer take for granted culturally and in many religious circles was once taken for granted without question and propped up by religious warrants?
