"Freedom of speech is being able to tell someone else something they don't want to hear." "No matter what you say, someone is going to be offended." Summarizing 2023: A subset of events for the year.

-China's economic re-opening stagnated. Had the first negative foreign direct investment flow in over two decades. And yet simultaneously, China surpasses Japan as world's biggest auto exporter. Huge gap between domestic consumption and export prowess.

-There was a US banking crisis involving a duration mismatch rather than a credit event. Resulted in some of the largest bank failures in American history, and the collapse of the 167-year old global systematically important bank, Credit Suisse. Liquidity was provided to the market and stocks went up toward all-time highs.

-The United States ran enormous deficits, resulting in one of the biggest divides between monetary policy and fiscal policy on record. Amid the deficits, consensus outlooks for a recession go largely contradicted, as some industries boom while others stagnate.

-Russia's invasion of Ukraine drags on. Russia's Prigozhin launches a rebellion, captures Rostov-on-Don and pushes hard toward Moscow, but then calls it off and agrees to leave. Prigozhin dies in a plane crash two months later, attributed to a bomb on board.

-A coup in Niger effectively pushes out France's presence from the country, and more broadly sheds light on France's ongoing presence in many African nations including with the CFA Franc.

-Israel suffers its worst terrorist attack in decades by Hamas, and responds with orders of magnitude more force on Gaza including major civilian casualties, and this war remains ongoing. Global public attention shifts from Ukraine/Russia to Gaza/Israel, and widely polarizes people across the world.

-The first recorded instance of space combat occurred as Israel intercepted a missile from Yemen in low Earth orbit. Yes, Earth's first known instance of non-test space combat was initiated not from within the United States, Russia, or China, but from Houthi rebels in Yemen.

-The first self-identified anarcho-capitalist candidate becomes head of state for a country, and for a G20 country no less. Calls for ending Argentina's central bank, after decades of uncontrolled fiscal monetization, inflation, and economic stagnation. If Argentina dollarizes, it would be the biggest country so far to do so.

-The Suez Canal is effectively closed over dangers posed to ships from Yemen. This impacts global shipping costs and energy, but likely hurts Egypt the most.

-Multiple other conflicts persist, including Myanmar's bloody civil war. Despite enormous casualties, these types of conflicts go largely ignored by the world because they don't materially affect the macroeconomy or bring major powers into potential conflict.

-The US federal government brings attention to UFOs/UAPs with multiple hearings, commissions, etc. But nobody really gives a shit. The public is like, "With all this going on, can we save the aliens topic until next year? Thanks."

To summarize your summary:

- Politicians across the globe continue to screw up everything while their citizens suffer, with no end in sight

- There might be aliens

Hmmm...I always struggle to understand folks owning a "Spy" phone, and at the same time having been orange pilled...seems quite inconsistent to me.

Oh give me a home, where the nostriches roam, and the plebs and the pilled zap all day....

Not sure I'd say it wasn't positive necessarily - and I think discussing how things are evolving away from centralization is a good thing (even if the author may get some of the details wrong).

Yes, it'll be messy--making cool things always is. But it's started, and it's going to get better--and (for me) that's the key message.

Want to TRULY make a difference?

How many of us have walked into a store, and asked the owner "Do you accept Bitcoin?"

Expecting the answer to be "no", we should then be prepared to respond with "Would you like me to show you how easy it is?" and then to be ready to help them download #strike or a similar "easy" app, and walk them through it.

At some point, we all need to "own" helping to move adoption forward -- and even if the answer is "No, I'm not interested" just that someone walked into the store and asked about Bitcoin will carry some weight.

If you "knock on the door" enough times, sooner or later the door will open...

When they hit the fretboard you know they need a trim....

LOL - I totally agree on Starbucks - don't patronize them personally, but was using them as an analogy.

My main point is BTC and layer 2s are evolving, and we can't expect everything to be pefect out of the gate - bu we can expect things to get better.

For now, I can see utility in Strike as a platform, and in Lightning (and in Liquid for that matter). We'll get there--just have to keep innovating.

(and no idea who dr banjo is, so a "no" to that question :))

Oh--I totally understand--and yet I'm absolutely ok with Strike being custodial * IF * all you're doing is loading up a few $$ and using the lightning network for the transaction.

It's kind of like an Amazon gift card - put some money into it, and spend that money. And (of course) we wouldn't be using gift cards as a custodian service...no, they're used simply for the convenience of transacting a set amount of money.

And so it is with Strike (and I see that as a great service, and a wonderful use case for Lightning).

I don't look at Lightning as a failure because it can't do all things well--rather, I think it does a few things * EXCEPTIONALLY * well, and for that we should applaud it--it moves the bar forward, and we'll find other (new) solutions for the other things.

Interesting to see the interviewer clench her jaw during particular portions of that interview...

So perhaps a bit of a contrarian here...but...Strike seems to have a viable solution. Essentially seamless (download the app, fund it, and send via lighning or BTC address or Strike account).

Downside? Sure there's some fees Strike charges for providing the service - but it solves the problem of setting up and maintaining your own node. But other than that--all the convenience of Lightning with none of the technical hassles for a small fee.

Seems (frankly) worth it to me...and perhaps I'm missing something (so would very much welcome the thoughts of others to help educate me if I am).

In summary--kind of like Starbucks--you can brew a darn good latte at home, but most of us pay Starbucks for the convenience and saving of the hassle.

For me, it seems Strike is doing the same thing for Lightning users....

One of my favorite quotes (attirbuted to Henry Ford I believe):

"Whether you think you can, or can not--you're right"

Success is rarely easy...it almost always takes hard work and sacrafice.

Yet it come with a corollary: "If it was easy, it wouldn't be any fun."

Looking back at life, my most enjoyable moments were when someone said "that can't be done" and I decided to do it anyway.

Thank you for posting this--we all need to be reminded how important it is to be relentless as we journey through life.

Does a simple way exist to set up a Relay without any technical complexity?

I'm thinking something along the lines of an Umbrel app or a Docker container? (I know there's already and Umbrel app, but apparently there are challenges with having others reach your relay). And having said that, even those may be too complicated for most...

If we don't have something easy (think "easy button") then we'll only have relays available to techinical folks (i.e. centralized).

Thoughts? Am I asking too much, or is this something that's possible, and we've just not yet gotten around to it?

Here' my conundrum:

https://usenostr.org/relay

https://nutcroft.com/blog/how-to-run-your-own-nostr-relay/

We need something "easy" - download an app, add an extension to your browser, Docker or Umbrel...but something non-technical for the average Joe...

Something that "just works" out of the box...

On this Thanksgiving Day, I just wanted to express my gratitude to all the Nostr devs who are working hard to develop this platform.

For those of us that aren't coders, please recognize that we truly appreciate your efforts! Without your skills and dedication, Nostr wouldn't exist.

Thank you!

Good Morning Nostr

Having a tough Monday? Could be worse...

It might be that time of year when you have to scrape the velvet off your antlers, and you end up wearing a bit of a "hat" as a result.

Not very dignified for sure...
